Service Required message displays in print utility window

After changing an ink cartridge, my printer won't respond. The print head seems immobile, the top and middle lights blink on/off red (paper feed and ink cartridge change lights). A message in utility window says something about parts may be at or near the end of their life.

Did you use an original part or so called comparable ink?

This error is related to the WIC/waste ink pads. If you see the paper and ink lights flashing like this with this error, it's the waste ink with the cryptic Epson error. The newer ones usually say the ink pads are at the end of their service life.

It can be cleared with a leaked copy of the Epson adjustment tool, or WIC Reset Utility. However, you need to either divert the waste ink outside of the unit or take the entire thing apart to clean the pads out or it will make a mess. Some have a panel you can drill out or discard the inspection panel; others do not and you need to add the hole.
