Why isn't it charging or being recognized by PC?

I was given a broken iPod touch by a friend. They forgot the passcode and they couldnt get it to turn on. I have tried charging it with an iPhone and a Griffin iPod charger, but even though it turns on, and says "iPod disabled connect to iTunes", the computer won't notice its plugged in either, and the iPod doesnt charge.

Update

Well actually the people at the apple store said the dock connector was fried. So i tire the thin apart and sold the screen to my buddy for $10. His screen was shattered. His now works a. Least. But this one ended up in he landfill :(
