Why does my iPhone3G only works with external MIC/Headset?

My iPhone 3G only works with external mic/headset.

People cannot hear me speak, nor does the Memo Recorder work, except when an external mic/headset is plugged in.

Thank you

I installed a new docking PCB, but the problem is still the same.

I can hear the caller, but the caller cannot hear me.

In addition to that the Memo Recorder on the IPhone does not record any sound - except when I plug in an external mic.

Could there be a problem with the external mic connector in that it has a defect that causes the external mic connection to override the internal mic, always?

that sounds baaaaaaad - can you tell me sonething about the phones history? fluid damages, dropped, overrun... - if the internal mic isn't working, but the earpiece is (we have to rule out that the phone isn't stuck in headphone mode) also the speaker/buzzer in the dock is working normal - then there is a problem with the audio codec ic or the connection between the dock connector and the audio ic

If OP can't hear other speak that'd point to the earpiece speaker

by

in his case: "People cannot hear me speak, nor does the Memo Recorder work, except when an external mic/headset is plugged in." - it's the microphone - they don't hear him - so his mic is dead, if he wouldn't hear them - the earpiece would be the dead part

I'm having same issue. I already tried replacing dock connector. My iPhone have never had any water damage, but I did drop it and thats when it stopped working.

Is there any other suggestions to test what part may be the cause?

check cable number 4

Markus,

I have checked it numerous times. It seems to be connected right. I also inspected the capacitors/resistors that are in series with it, and they seem ok. Its strange how everything on the dock connector works, except the mic. Not sure what other components are tied to the mic. Perhaps the Audio chip might have a weak pin that isn't making contact. The last resort I can think of to fix this problem is try to re flow the chip with a heat gun. But I'm afraid I might damage other components. Never worked on iPhones before.

by

check the parts in the area around connector 4, anything missing? what kind of heat gun do you use? i used mine a few times on th iphone/ipod touch - but you must be extremely careful - almost every part is underfilled
