Fix it. Then pass it on.

The world has a stuff problem. We produced 62 million Metric tons of e-waste in 2022, and we’re on track to double that by 2050. The vast majority of our waste goes to landfills or collects dust in junk drawers. But it doesn’t have to be that way. What if we all committed to buying refurbished stuff, keeping it as long as possible via repair, passing it on to people who can use it, and fighting for a world where long-lasting tech is the norm, not the exception?

Your smartphone should last 10 years

Right now, people keep their phones for about 2.5 years. We’re calling on consumers to commit to keeping their phones for 5 years, taking care of their devices, repairing as necessary, and then passing them onto Back Market. We’re also encouraging people to choose refurbished over new whenever possible. To make this work, we’re asking manufacturers to make software and security updates available for 10 years.

Longer lifespans help us all breathe a little easier

Keeping an iPhone 13 for 5 years instead of 2.5 years with a battery replacement cuts its annual carbon emissions by 49%, and extending its life to 10 years through repairs and refurbishment reduces emissions by 68%. If adopted worldwide, this shift could prevent 21.6 million tons of CO2e per year—equivalent to the annual energy consumption of the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
