Windows 8 Shuts Off Randomly

Turn Off the Hybrid Shutdown Feature ¶ 

The Hybrid Shutdown feature turns off your computer whenever a critical error occurs. Turn it off with these steps:

1. Press Windows Key + X.

2. Type “View advanced system settings” in the Search Box.

3. Click the Settings icon.

4. Open it from the Search Results.

5. System Properties dialog will open.

6. Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery frame.

7. Uncheck the box named “Automatically restart” under System Failure category.

8. Click the OK button.

Check for Overheating ¶ 

Shutdown the system, unplug the main power supply, unpack the components and clean-out the dust. Make sure that the processor fan installed near your SMPS are working properly. You may need to replace those fans, if they are not working. In some cases, the problem arises when your graphics card is overheating frequently. Unplug all the cables of your system board, re-plug them properly. In case of laptop, you may buy a laptop cooling pad to control the temperature and to avoid excessive overheating.

Reset your CMOS Settings ¶ 

Your CMOS settings might have been changed recently. Restore the default CMOS settings through the steps given below:

1. Turn off your machine.

2. Press the Power button.

3. Press F2 or Delete key repeatedly until CMOS Configuration screen appears.

4. Select Exit menu with the help of your keyboard arrow keys.

5. Select “Restore default settings”.

6. Now select “Save settings and exit”.

Disable Background Programs ¶ 

Generally, Windows boots up with lot of background programs and services. Many background programs are not necessary for a lot of users. You may have to go through the list of all background programs and disable those you really don’t use. This might avoid overheating.

1. Press Windows Key + X.

2. Click Run.

3. Type “services.msc” in the Open textbox, press ENTER key.

4. Right click a service entry, select Disable. Follow the same for other services.

5. Right click your Taskbar, select Task Manager.

6. Click “More details” link.

7. Click the Startup tab.

8. Right click a startup application, select Disable. Repeat the same for other startups.

9. Exit Task Manager.
