Troubleshooting - Cingular 8125 Pocket PC
Phone Runs Slowly & Frozen Screen ¶
This is when the screen freezes, not allowing the cursor to move or the user to exit the program he or she is in. If the phone is running slow, it will take longer to move from program to program.
Either of these problems occurs when the phone is trying to process too much information at once. For example, if there are a lot of programs open at one time or if there are multiple tabs open on the Internet browser.
This problem can also be caused when the phone is bogged down or overwhelmed with too much data, like if there are a lot of downloads or files on the phone.
Slow Phone ¶
If your Pocket PC becomes bogged down and seems to be running at a slow speed, you will need to reset it. A “hardware soft reset” will reboot the phone.
Notice: All open programs will close. Any unsaved information will be lost.
Hardware Soft Reset
- Start with phone facing upwards, so you are looking at the screen with the word “Cingular” at the top.
- Remove stylus from the Pocket PC. The stylist is found in the bottom right-hand corner of the phone. See instructions to remove stylus if you have difficulties, on Page 5.
- Use the pointed end of the stylist to press the reset button. The Reset Button is found on the right-hand side of the phone directly below the Infrared port.
- The phone will then shut down, and restart. It should now start up normally, and be unfrozen.
Frozen Screen ¶
If your Pocket PC becomes frozen on any screen, there are two different solutions you may use to unfreeze the screen. The first is called the “hardware soft reset.” See Hardware Soft Reset on Page 1.
The second solution to unfreeze the screen is the “hardware hard reset.” Notice: Using the Hardware Hard Reset will wipe the phone clean, leaving the phone in its original condition and set back to factory settings.
Hardware Hard Reset
- Holding the phone, remove the stylus from the bottom of the phone.
- Note: If the stylus is hard to grasp, you may need to take off the back cover to retrieve the stylus. See How to Remove Stylus on Page 5 for instructions.
- Holding the phone in your left hand, press and hold the “Communications Manager Button,” located on the top, left-hand side of the phone.
- While still holding the Comm. Manager Button, press and hold the “Voice Command Button,” located on the top, right-hand side of the phone. Note: Do not release either of these buttons until the Reset Button is pressed.
- Using the stylus in your right hand, use the pointed end to press the “Reset Button,” a small hole below the oval-shaped Infrared port.
- After pressing the Reset Button, release the Comm. Manager and Voice Command buttons.
The phone will then be reset to factory settings.
Phone Won’t Turn On ¶
The screen will be completely black, with no programs running if the phone won’t turn on. This means no phone calls, txt-messages, emails, etc. are being received or sent.
Often times, the phone will not turn on because the battery is dead. Without a charge or life in the battery, the phone has no way of powering itself.
If your phone won't turn on, there are two possible problems you may need to address. You will either need to charge the battery or replace the battery.
Replace Battery ¶
- Flip the phone over so you are looking at the back.
- Remove the stylus, located in the bottom left corner.
- Slide the back cover down with your thumb and set it aside.
- Gently pull the black tab up to pop the battery out.
- Place your new battery in the phone, lining the terminal on the battery with the terminal in the phone.
- Slide the back cover up on the phone until you hear it click in place.
Charge Battery ¶
- Insert the charger's USB tab into the phone's port, located on the bottom of the phone.
- Plug the charger into an electric outlet.
Sound Problems ¶
Sound problems include not being able to hear music when using the media player or people’s voice when using the actual telephone aspect.
The cause of this problem will most likely be due to the media program not running correctly, in which the phone will need to be restarted or reset.
Another cause of a sound problem would be a defect or issue with the speaker system, in which consultation and/or repairs from the manufacturer or cell phone provider will be needed.
If you experience problems with sound, you will need to do a “hard reset” of the phone. There are two different ways this can be done: a software hard reset or a hardware hard reset.
Notice: With either of these resets, the data from the phone will be wiped clean, leaving the phone in its original condition and set back to factory settings.
Software Hard Reset ¶
- Looking at your home screen, press the “Start” dropdown menu with the stylus (located on the bottom backhand corner of the phone).
- Using the stylus, tap the “Settings” option at the bottom of the menu.
- Tap the “Clear Storage” button.
- A prompter will then appear, warning that the data of the phone will be lost if selected. If you want to continue follow the instructions given: type “1234” in the allotted box, and tap “Yes” on the bottom of the screen.
- The phone will then be reset to factory settings.

How to Remove Stylus ¶
If you are having difficulty removing the stylus from the bottom of the phone, follow these instructions:
- Holding the phone upright, flip it over so that the headphone jack is on the top, facing the ceiling.
- Locate the gray track on the back of the phone. (It will appear as a long horizontal oval.)
- Holding the phone with both hands, use both thumbs to press the back of the phone in the upward position by pushing against the gray track.
- You will hear a click, notifying you that the back of the phone was released.
- Slide the back of the phone upright, allowing the stylus to be completely removed from the phone.
- Holding the back phone cover, remove the stylus from the cover by pushing through its slot.
- You have now removed the stylus.
- Replace phone back before proceeding with other instructions.
