JBL Clip 5 Has Distorted Audio

The JBL Clip 5s speaker audio is muffled and is hard to hear.

Audio is Distorted

If the base radiator is no longer working, it breaks the seal required for the base response, distorts the sound, and ruins the speaker's waterproofing.

  • Temporary Fix (no longer waterproof)
    • Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt, oils, etc. Then apply a thin layer of glue slightly around the puncture, then let it sit for 24 hours before you’re able to play music.
  • Permanent Fix
    • Power it off, fully disconnecting it from anything
    • Remove the carabiner, then open the enclosure before separating it into halves
    • Remove the components inside, then start reassembling and replacing them

Surround Is Damaged/Torn

The speaker surround is the flexible material around the edge of the speaker diaphragm. It allows the diaphragm to move back and forth while maintaining a controlled seal. If the surround is torn, loose, or deteriorated, the speaker may produce buzzing, rattling, or distorted audio.

  • Temporary Fix
    • Turn off the speaker.
    • Inspect the visible speaker components for damage without pressing the diaphragm.
    • Avoid high-volume playback because excessive movement can worsen the damage.
    • If the surround is visibly torn, discontinue use until it can be repaired.
  • Permanent Fix
    • Open the speaker following a suitable repair guide[Link to repair guide].
    • Inspect the speaker driver for damage to the surround, diaphragm, and attachment points.
    • Replace the damaged driver if the surround cannot be repaired reliably.
    • Reassemble the speaker and verify that the enclosure is properly sealed.

Debris or Grille Damage

Debris Damage Fix:

  • Gentry scrub the grille with a dry, soft-bristled toothbrush to loosen the debris.
  • Use a painter’s tape and press firmly against the grille holes and pull it away to lift out the stubborn surface particles.
  • Use a spray canned compressed air in short quick bursts across the grill. (Careful not to spray directly into the holes as due to the extreme pressure might possibly tear the internal waterproof acoustic mesh).

Dented Grille Fix:

  • Try to identify the point of contact where the grille is dented.
  • Create a small hook like a thin sewing needle or a tiny paper clip shaped as an “L”.
  • Carefully slip it into the grille hole next to the deepest part of the dent. Twist it slowly so that it catches the underside of the metal and pull it outward gently. Do accordingly to adjacent holes where dent is prevalent.

Water Exposure

Audio distortion due to water exposure happens when a liquid is trapped or temporary condensation that temporarily alters the movement of the speaker driver and diaphragm.

Some fixes include:

  • Shake out the excess water that is pooled in the grille and the internal chamber.
  • Placing the speaker in a ventilated area or under mild sunlight (be wary to make sure that the speaker doesn't heat up). Allow it to dry completely before playing the audio and avoid any attempts to charge it.
  • Play a specialized low-frequency vibration sound at a high volume. This would allow for the remaining  water droplet to be pushed out of the mesh.
  • Avoid charging it while wet as plugging into a USB-C port as it might cause short-circuiting.
