HP Pavilion 17-f127ds Troubleshooting
This troubleshooting page will help you troubleshoot problems with the HP Pavilion 17-f127ds.
The keyboard has sticky, broken, or missing keys. The TouchPad is not working properly.
Keys Are Missing
If several keys on the keyboard are missing or the board is damaged, the keyboard will need to be replaced by using this guide.
Keys Are Sticky or Stuck
The keyboard might not have to be replaced if a key is stuck or sticky. Most keys can be removed and cleaned.
Turn off the notebook and unplug the AC adapter before working on the keyboard. Remove the battery before removing the key. Gently insert a spudger 1/8 inch under the edge of the key and gently prying up on the top and bottom edge. If the key is stuck because of liquid or other sticky residue, the key and the slot may be cleaned with a cotton swab with alcohol. Let the key and slot dry thoroughly. Replace key by snapping it into place. Longer keys like the Spacebar and Enter have a small metal rod for support. This rod must be inserted into the key and keyboard before replacing the key into the keyboard.
If a key cannot be unstuck, or the keys can not be removed replace the keyboard by using this guide.
Several Characters Appear After Striking a Key Once
You can adjust the key repeat delay on your keyboard. Go to Settings and type "Control Panel" in the search bar and press enter. Type "keyboard" in the Control Panel search box. Select and click Keyboard in the results. On the Keyboard Properties screen, drag the Repeat delay slider to Long. Click OK to save changes.
HP provides diagnostic software to test hardware components on your computer and confirm hardware failures when you suspect something is wrong. Use HP PC Diagnostics UEFI as the preferred method for testing hardware.
Computer functions may be restored by performing a hard reset. Aside erasing information on the memory, the software connection between BIOS and hardware gets reset.
If the keyboard is not responding, first perform a hard reset with the following steps:
Perform a hard reset with the following steps:
- Turn off the computer.
- Remove the laptop from a charging or docking station.
- Disconnect any peripheral items. i.e. thumb drives, external mouse, etc.
- Unplug the charging cable.
- Remove the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to get rid of any residual charge.
- Insert the battery. DO NOT replace any external devices yet.
- Press the power button.
- If prompted, start Windows normally.
- Update any drivers that may be out of date.
If the keyboard does not respond, try this next step.
Test Your Keyboard in BIOS Environment
Shut down the computer and restart. Press the F10 key repeatedly to see if the BIOS menu opens. If BIOS menu does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working. The keyboard should be replaced with this guide.
If a BIOS menu opens, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. If the keys are working in the BIOS menu, but then fail when Windows loads, the problems are occurring in Windows. Make sure Windows and its drivers are up to date.
Sometimes touchpads are accidently turned on and off.
Try to Enable the TouchPad
In windows settings, use an external mouse to search for ‘mouse button.’ Click the ‘Mouse’ or ‘Change Mouse Settings’ in the Control Panel. Under Mouse Properties, click the Device Settings or the ClickPad settings tab. Under Device list, choose the desired touchpad and click ‘Enable’ to turn on the device.
If the TouchPad does not respond, try updating the TouchPad drivers.
Touchpad Scrolling and Gesturing issues
If the Touchpad is scrolling or gesturing unexpectedly, try adjusting the touchad settings.
Go to Change Mouse Settings from the Control Panel, or search for Mouse Settings in the Windows search function.
From this menu you can enable/disable scrolling, or change the scroll rate.
Install Updated Software and Hardware Drivers
If the touch pad is still malfunctioning. Make sure all drivers are up to date. Type ‘settings’ in the Windows search bar and click settings. Click on the update and security icon. Click ‘check for updates.’ Windows update will check for updates and will update drivers automatically. Restart the notebook.
If the TouchPad does not respond, try performing a hard reset.
Perform a Hard Reset
To perform a hard reset, refer to the steps in the above Faulty Keyboard section.
Run HP Diagnostics
If the TouchPad does not respond, try running HP PC UEFI Hardware Diagnostics Component test (F2) for Mouse.
If the touchpad is still not working, the entire keyboard may need to be replaced. You can do so using this guide.
You can’t hear any sounds coming from the HP Pavilion. The speakers do not seem to be working.
Test Loose Headphone External Speaker Jack
The audio jack or the headphones may be faulty if the audio is only distorted while listening through the headphones.
Test audio through the computer speakers. Test it with headphones or external speakers by plugging the headphones (or speakers) into the headphone jack. Make sure the audio jack is fully inserted into the computer because audio that cuts in and out is often an indicator of a broken/lose audio jack.
If you have replaced the headphones or speakers and there still is no sound coming from the speakers, try this step.
Make Sure the Default Audio Device is Set
After applying the windows troubleshooting tool, make sure your desired audio device is set as default:
# In windows settings, search for ‘sounds.’
- Click on ‘Change system sounds.’
- You can also right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select Playback devices.
- In the Sound window, from the ‘Playback’ tab, select your playback device, then click ‘Set Default.’
- If only one playback device is listed, it is set to default automatically.
- Select ‘Speakers and Headphones’ and click on configure.
- Select and click speaker setup in ‘Audio channels.’
- Click ‘Test’ to send sound in both speaker, or select an individual speaker and test sound to individual speaker.
- If you detect sound from each speaker, you are finished.
- If sound is missing from all or one of the speakers, or if the configuration type was changed, continue with speaker setup by clicking ‘Next’.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the speaker setup.
- Test for sound. If sound problems persist, continue to the next step.
- Test for sound. If you have followed the Windows troubleshooting guide and there still is no sound coming from the speakers, try this next step:
Update the Audio Driver Using Device Manager
Make sure the audio device is enabled, then update the audio driver using Device Manager.
If you completed these steps and the latest driver was already installed, use the following steps to uninstall and then reinstall the driver:
- In Windows setting search for ‘Device Manager.’
- Click on ‘Device Manager.’
- Double-click ‘Sound, video and game controllers.’
- Right-click the sound device and select ‘Uninstall.’
- Restart the computer to reinstall the driver.
- Test for sound.
If there is still no sound, perform a hard reset. To perform a hard reset refer to the instructions in the Faulty Keyboard section.
Use Window’s Troubleshooting Tool
The Windows audio troubleshooting tool can fix audio recording and audio playback problems with your computer.
Run Windows troubleshooting tool using the following steps: In Windows Settings, search for ‘fix audio.’ Click on fix audio playback problems. You can also right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar Troubleshoot sound problems. Click on Next. Select the device you want to troubleshoot and click Next. The troubleshooter will detect problems and make changes (or prompts you to make changes). After the troubleshooter is finished, a ‘Troubleshooting has completed’ page will be displayed, listing problems detected and what changes were made to the computer. If an action is required, select ‘Apply this fix,’ or ‘Skip this step’ to continue searching for other problems. If you’d like detailed information about the troubleshooting, click ‘View detailed information in the troubleshooter window.’ Click Close.
If you have followed the Windows troubleshooting guide and there still is no sound coming from the speakers, try this next step:
Run the Audio Test From the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
The Hardware Diagnostics Audio Playback Test checks the system for errors tests the functionality of the audio subsystem.
NOTE: For more information about installing and using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic tests, see Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8 & 10).
Select ‘Speaker’ to begin the test. During the test, music notes will be played in sequence and repeatedly. Listen choose the number of notes you hear in that sequence. If you miscount the tone number, repeat the test. If there is no sound, select No sound.
If the tests fail, note the information and contact HP Support or follow instructions on how to replace the keyboard here.

Update the BIOS
You can find instructions to update BIOS here.
Reset BIOS to Defaults
First, reset BIOS to defaults.
If you reset the BIOS to default and the is still no sound, try to perform an HP System Recovery. You can find instructions here. If you performed a HP System Recovery, and there is still no sound the speakers will need to be replaced by using this guide.
Your HP Pavilion Will Not Read Any CD's or DVD's.
Your HP Pavilion Notebook 17 will not play CD’s, DVD’s or Program Discs.
Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 8 & 10)
Please be advised that if your computer was upgraded to Window 8 or 10, there may not be a software application installed on your computer capable of playing DVD or Blu-ray movies.
If your computer does not have this software decoder, purchase and install DVD and Blu-ray movie playback software that is compatible with your version of Windows.
The drive reads different types of discs but can’t read discs burned on another computer. Before troubleshooting the disc drive, try these steps:
Make sure the disc plays back from the computer the disc was burned from. If that computer can’t play the disc, something is wrong with the disc or the other computer's burn capabilities. Make sure the disc type is compatible with both the computer burning the disc and the computer playing the disc. Make sure the disc burning session was closed after the disc was finished. Try to burn the disc at lower speed. Although the disc type may be compatible with a 16x burn rate, the playback might be less compatible in other drives. Try burning the disc at 4x before playing it from other computers. Test the drive by burning and playing from three different brands of blank discs before troubleshooting the drive. After you have checked all of these items, if the drive is still incapable of reading discs that were burned from another computer, Try reinstalling the the DVD/Disc drive in device manager.
indows setting, search for ‘Device Manage’. Click on ‘Device Manager’. Double-click DVD/CD-ROM drives to expand the category. If the CD/DVD drive is listed, make sure AutoPlay is enabled.
Making Sure AutoPlay is Set
To make sure ‘AutoPlay” is enabled, follow these steps: In Windows setting, search ‘Control Panel.’ Click on ‘Control Panel.’ Click ‘Hardware and Sound,’ and select AutoPlay. Ensure ‘Use AutoPlay for all media and devices’ is selected. Click all the drop-down menus and select ‘Ask me every time’ next to every DVD, Blu-ray, and CD item. Click Save.
If AutoPlay has been enabled, and the disc drive is still not working properly, check the discs.
If your Notebook can’t read discs, confirm that the drive can read discs from the command prompt. Use the next steps to test the discs and and drive from the command prompt.
Read a Disc From a Command Prompt
If your computer cannot read discs, confirm that the drive can read discs from a command prompt.
Use the following steps to test the discs and the drive from a command prompt.
If the message "device is not ready" is shown, or the screen fails to update after 30 seconds, the disc or the drive may be bad. Repeat these steps with a few other discs of the same type to make sure the problem is not related to the disc.
If other discs can’t be read, test for CD/DVD Hardware Failure to test the drive to see if the drive has truly failed.
Test for CD/DVD Drive Hardware Failure
As the CD/DVD drive in your computer ages, it will be exposed to vibration, dust, mechanical wear, and other factors.
If the computer still cannot burn discs after performing the troubleshooting guides, test the drive for hardware failure.
If the test fails, the Disc Drive will need to be replaced. Use this guide to replace the Disc Drive.
Not enough RAM/Computer is Performing Slow
If your computer seems to be acting slower than usual, it may be because there isn't enough RAM.
Out of Date Drivers
First, make sure the computer and drivers are updated: Find and install updated software and hardware drivers for your computer. In Windows, search for ‘Windows Update’. Click on ‘Windows Update’. Click one of the following options, if presented, on the Windows Update window: If updates are available to download, click Install now. If no updates are currently listed, click ‘Check for Updates,’ and then click ‘Install now’ after Windows detects available updates.
If your computer has performance issues with a program, game or application, freezes, hangs or crashes during normal operation that means you have defective RAM or not enough RAM.
Hard Drive Error
Even though you have a hard drive in your computer, there may be an error on it. This can happen when the user shuts off the computer by pressing the power button instead of initiating the shutdown sequence through the operating system.
Boot Device Not Found
If you get an error saying 'Boot Device Not Found.' It may be a problem with a physical connector on the hard drive due to getting bumped or shaken. To access the hard drive and check the connectors, follow the replacement guide.
Perform a Hard Reset
To perform a hard reset, follow the steps outlined in the above 'Faulty Keyboard' Section.
Restore BIOS Default Settings
It may be an issue with the basic settings on the hard drive. To restore the default settings, follow these steps:
- Turn off the computer, wait at least five seconds.
- Press the power button, then repeatedly press the F10 key to access the BIOS menu.
- Press F9 to load BIOS default settings.
- Press F10 to save and exit.
- Confirm to save changes.
- Follow the prompts to restart the laptop.
After following these steps, your HP Pavilion Notebook 17 should boot correctly. If your computer fails to boot correctly and still has problems, you may need to replace your hard drive.
Broken/Defective Optical Drive/Outdated Video Driver
Video image flickers, is blurry, or discolored, the most likely cause is an outdated video driver.
Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall your original AMD Graphics driver - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers.
Adjust the Display Brightness Using the Function Keys
The function keys adjust the brightness of the display. Follow these steps to adjust the brightness of the screen.
Restart the computer. Adjusting the display brightness might reset the settings to default based on the power source (battery or AC). This is not a mistake; the notebook is functioning as designed.
You can use the function keys to change the brightness back to the desired setting, or change the default settings in Control Panel.
If the display is still dim, you can adjust the brightness following through Windows these steps: In Windows, search for ‘Power Options.’ Click on Power Options. Move the slider bar to the right to increase the brightness of the screen.
In Settings, search ‘Control Panel.’ Click ‘Control Panel’, then click ‘Display.’ To change the size of text and windows, click ‘Medium’ or ‘Larger’, then click ‘Apply.’ Right-click the desktop and click ‘Screen Resolution.’ Click the image of the monitor that you want to adjust. To change the screen size for the selected monitor, select a resolution from the menu, then click ‘Apply.’ In most circumstances, use the native resolution of the monitor. Right-click the desktop and click Screen resolution.To change the orientation between landscape and portrait or to flip the orientation, select an option from the Resolution menu, then click Apply. A confirmation window opens. Click Keep changes to save the settings, or click Revert to cancel the change.
