Garmin Nuvi 200W Troubleshooting

This troubleshooting page will help you identify problems with the Garmin Nuvi 200W GPS device released in December 2005.

Missing Audio ¶ 

Device will not produce voice navigation prompts.

Volume settings ¶ 

Ensure the volume setting is on and not muted. Touch the icon on the touch-screen with the corresponding diagram of a speaker. After this, touch the icon with the diagram depicting sound increasing.

Frozen device ¶ 

If the volume is all the way up and the device still will not produce audio, the device may be frozen. Restart the Garmin Nuvi 200W. Perform a hard reset of the Garmin Nuvi 200W. Lift the sticker with the serial number on it and press the reset button.

Faulty speakers ¶ 

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, the speakers on the device may be broken. This will require replacement of the device's speakers. The speaker may have been damaged overtime.

Unresponsive Touchscreen ¶ 

The screen will not recognize touch input.

Device is off ¶ 

Ensure the device is powered on. The power button is located at the top left of the device and will need to be pushed to the left for a couple of seconds. If the device still will not start, there may be a problem with the battery.

Device is frozen ¶ 

If screen is illuminated but unresponsive, the device may be frozen. Try restarting the device to resolve this. This is done by turning the power off, then turning the power back on.

Faulty screen ¶ 

If the screen is damaged or cracked it may require replacement in order to recognize touch inputs. A broken screen may have more problems than the physical appearance of the damage.

Incorrect Touch Input ¶ 

The device's touchscreen is only responsive to a certain range of input. Make sure your interaction is with an uncovered finger. Any external objects on the finger may interfere with touchscreen functionality.

Not Holding Charge ¶ 

Battery life seems significantly reduced.

Old Battery ¶ 

If the device functions with plugged in, but will not work when unplugged from power, the battery may require replacement. Overtime the battery reduces its maximum amount of charge and will steadily decrease lifetime. Max sure to keep the battery fully charged consistently.

Faulty Charging Cable ¶ 

If the charging cable is not working, try charging with a different cable to resolve this issue. The cable could have an open in the wires or can have an intermittent connection. This means that the device isn't properly getting the electricity through the wire.

Faulty Charging Port ¶ 

If the battery is in good condition and the charging cable has no problems, there may be a problem with the charging port. This may be fixed by replacing the motherboard.

Failure to Find Destinations ¶ 

GPS does not recognize location/maps incorrect.

Weak Signal ¶ 

When in an area where there is a weak signal, maps will not update correctly. Move to an area with better signal, then wait for the device to reconnect to the network. If this still does not work restart the device and try again.

Outdated Firmware ¶ 

If the device cannot find maps when powered on and it is responsive, it may need a firmware update. Firmware updates can be installed by connecting the Garmin Nuvi 200W to a computer and downloading the latest firmware from Garmin's website.

Faulty Logic Board ¶ 

If the firmware is up to date and the device still cannot locate maps, the logic board of the device may require replacement.

Won't Turn on When Battery is Charged ¶ 

Unresponsive to power switch.

Faulty Battery ¶ 

If the device does not power on when charged and is not particularly old, the battery may be faulty and may require replacement.

Cold Battery ¶ 

The battery in the Garmin Nuvi 200W works better when it is warm. If the battery is particularly cold (below freezing) for a period of time, it may require warming up (room temperature) before it will power on.

Faulty Display ¶ 

The screen may not be properly displaying and may need a replacement. The back light could be off, which doesn't allow the user to see the display properly. This could be distinguished from audio/navigation prompts generated by the Garmin Nuvi 200W
