Dell Precision 3551 Battery Low Power

Trouble shooting page for improving the battery life of the Dell Precision 3551.

Some users report  that the Dell precision 3551 can have low battery power. If your Dell Precision 3551 is running slow, your laptop may not process quickly .  Our team believes the low battery power is due to battery degradation, display and peripherals drain, incorrect BIOS charging settings, incompatible or under powered charger, high background processing.

This trouble shooting page may help you understand why the battery is low and what to do to fix it.

Causes

Battery Degradation

Over time, it is inevitable for a laptop’s battery to have a lower capability to store and transfer energy. You may notice battery degradation if your runtimes are now hours shorter than the original runtime, slow charging, unexpected shutdowns, and more.

Solution:

  • Buy a replacement battery that matches the one you previously had. Make sure your device is unplugged and turned off and then remove the bottom cover.
  • Carefully unscrew and remove the old battery and replace it with the new battery. Screw the battery in and make sure any other necessary compartments are connected.

Display and Peripherals Drain

A laptop battery is used to power more than just the computer itself. Things such as excessively high brightness and external USB Devices will tend to drain the battery life quicker

Solution:

  • Limit high brightness to only when it is needed.
  • Unplug any external USB devices such mouses or speakers when not in use.

BIOS Charging Settings Incorrect

Incorrect BIOS battery charging setting will limit when or how the battery chargers. Outdated BIOS firmware may cause charging management issues.

Solution:

  • Check the BIOS battery charging configuration and select an appropriate charging mode.
  • Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS setup to verify that the battery charging configuration is set up correctly

Incompatible Charger

Using an incompatible or underpowered charger could cause the battery to charge slowly. Running demanding applications while charging can reduce the amount of power available for charging the battery.

Solution:

  • Use a compatible Dell power adapter which has the correct wattage for the laptop.
  • Close demanding applications while charging to reduce power consumption.

High Background Process

Whenever a computer is running programs it uses a certain amount battery life, and since so many applications tend to run in the background it starts to add up and drain your battery life quickly

Solution:

  • You can use a Windows battery report to see which applications a using up more battery life then others
  • You can also use task manager to help close and delete any unwanted applications then are draining excess battery life
