Finding possible causes ¶
When the drive powers on you should hear a whirling noise coming from the bottom of the computer. When starting up the computer hold down the F2 key until a terminal screen (Black screen with white and blue computer text) appears. Select "Boot" from the top menu and from the list below select "hard disk drives". If the hard drive has not failed, then it should be listed. If drive shows up but does not fully boot then you must enter safe mode by rebooting the computer and holding the shift key. You will notice an advanced boot options menu, select "safe mode" and boot should become successful. If this does not work then you will need to buy a new hard drive.
Rebooting Computer ¶
Does the screen say check OS when booting? If so, then your operating systems is corrupt and you must enter safe mode by rebooting computer and holding down shift key for 10 seconds. You will notice an advanced boot options menu, select "safe mode" and boot should become successful. If this does not work then you will need to buy a new hard drive.
Computer powers on but screen is black ¶
Computer is working, screen is not
Test on secondary monitor ¶
Obtain Video Graphics Array (VGA) cable and plug into VGA or PC port to bottom left port and secondary monitor, then boot computer. You should be able to see the computer appear on secondary monitor. If this happens you must replace this part.
Test for loose connection ¶
Move monitor at different angles to see if there is a loose connection. If that is the case then you will need this part.
USB port not working ¶
Connection to USB devices stopped functioning
Testing the USB device ¶
Test your USB device on another device to ensure that it is not the problem, and then try another USB port on your device. If it still does not work then re-install drivers by locating device manager in the start menu.
