Frozen System
The system may freeze leaving a black screen even if the power is on.
- A Hard Reset forces the hardware to reboot and will usually resolve this issue
External Devices Plugged In
The screen may be black if an external display is plugged into the device.
- Restart the device by holding the power button until the power LED indicator turns off. Then press the power button to turn the device back on.
- Unplug all external devices from the device, if the screen turns on, navigate to Settings -> Device -> Displays. From here, you can change the display setting to match your desired screen layout.
Touchscreen Calibration/Driver Errors
Chrome OS may have failed to load the driver, or the screen needs a power cycle to detect touch inputs.
- Turn off the Chromebook. Hold down the Refresh button and tap the Power button. Release Refresh when it starts up.
- Remove dirt or oils, these can cause unresponsiveness
- Go to Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for updates to ensure the driver is up to date
- Unplug any mice, keyboards, or USB-C hubs to rule out hardware conflicts
Faulty Battery or Charging Port
The device itself may not turn on due to a faulty battery.
- Verify the power LED indicator turns on after pressing and holding the power button for 2-5 seconds. If the device does not power on, try powering on with the charger plugged in.
- Verify the issue is not the charger itself by trying another USB-C cable.
- Ensure the battery is not swollen.
Damaged or Faulty Screen
If all possible software failures have been ruled out, the screen itself or its connection could be faulty.
- Replace the screen.
