Alienware M17-R1 Troubleshooting
Released in 2009, after Alienware was acquired by Dell, this gaming laptop utilized Intel processing and dual graphics cards.
Device does not turn on
The laptop does not turn on when you press the power button.
Battery is incorrectly placed
If the laptop is not plugged in and it fails to turn on, it could mean your battery is not firmly seated in the battery port. Press firmly on the battery cover to ensure it is correctly installed.
Ensure the charging cord is properly inserted into the charging port. If the laptop can turn on while plugged in, this does not necessarily mean the battery is charging. Allow it to charge for one to two hours to fully charge.
Charging cord defective
If the laptop is plugged and still doesn't turn on, then the charging cord may be defective. It will need to be replaced in order to charge the battery and turn the laptop on.
Keyboard not responding
When you turn the laptop on, you can't type on the keyboard.
Keyboard not responding
Restart the computer and make sure it is fully charged. This allows the computer restart its processes and reestablish its connections to the keyboard.
Keys are stuck down
Clean debris from the surface of the keyboard using a compressed air duster or a light brush. It may be necessary to remove the keys in order to do this.
USB port does not function
Your USB port doesn't recognize a device or deliver power to it.
Object is lodged into the port
If there is an object stuck into the port, such as dust or a piece of paper, turn the laptop off. Use a non-metal tool, such as a wooden or plastic pick, to remove the obstruction from the port.
Port has visual damage
The connector pins inside the port may be bent or damaged. Turn the laptop off and use a non-metal pick to carefully reposition the pins so that they are aligned in the port.
USB device may be faulty
The device you are trying to plug in may be at fault. Test it in another USB port to ensure that it works properly.
Laptop is overheating
Your laptop becomes hot when you use it, or it alerts you of its temperature.
Fans don't have proper air flow
Fans need to be able to move air through the laptop's internal hardware. Make sure the laptop is on a hard, flat surface and that the fan exhaust ports are not blocked. This will ensure it has optimal airflow.
Excessive dust on the fans
Dust can settle on the fans and internal components of the laptop. Over time, this can affect its ability to get rid of heat. Use a compressed air duster to clean the dust off. If a more intensive cleaning is required, you can follow our guide to access the fans [here].
Laptop is hot while running a program
Some laptop programs are more resource intensive than others. If you find that the laptop runs hot while playing a game or other process, pause or close the program and allow the laptop to cool down. You can also lower your display and graphics settings to avoid this problem in the future.
Screen does not lock properly
The screen does not lock or stay locked when you close it.
Hook is damaged
If the hooks are chipped or broken, it will need to be replaced to function properly. For instructions to replace the latch, follow this guide.
Latch spring is broken
To test the latch spring, move the latch. If it returns to its original position, then it is still functioning. If it doesn't return, it could be broken or misaligned. To realign or replace it, refer to the replacement guide here.
Debris is blocking the lock assembly
Clean the latch assembly thoroughly to remove debris. It may be necessary to use a hook to dislodge larger objects.
