Alienware AW510H Audio Has Unbalanced Sound
Sound issues can be caused by the following issues: physical connections, sound settings or compatibility issues.
1. Physical & Connection Checks
Before diving into settings, rule out hardware hiccups first.
- Reseat the Cables: The AW510H has a detachable cable system. Ensure the cable is pushed completely into the headset ear cup — even a millimeter out will drop a channel. Also confirm it's fully seated in the device.
- USB DAC vs. 3.5mm: If using the USB dongle, try a different port (preferably a rear port on a desktop). Then try bypassing the dongle entirely with the 3.5mm splitter. If sound is balanced over 3.5mm but not USB, the dongle is the culprit.
- Inline Volume Wheel: The physical volume slider on the cable can get stuck between contacts and cause one side to dip. Scroll it up and down rapidly to clear dust or static.
2. Windows Sound Balance Settings
Windows occasionally stores a volume offset for specific devices.
- Press Win + R, type
mmsys.cpl, and hit Enter. - In the Playback tab, right-click your Alienware AW510H and select Properties.
- Go to the Levels tab and click Balance.
- Confirm both L and R are set to the same value (e.g., 100).
3. Alienware Command Center (AWCC) & Drivers
The AW510H relies heavily on AWCC for its 7.1 Virtual Surround sound processing.
- Disable Audio Effects: Open AWCC, go to the Fusion tab (thermometer icon), and select the Audio section. Turn off all Smart Echo, Bass Boost, and Reverb effects to check whether a software profile is causing the imbalance.
- Reinstall the Driver:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click Alienware AW510H Gaming Headset and select Uninstall device.
- Unplug the headset, restart your PC, and plug it back in. Windows will reinstall a clean driver automatically.
