ASUS Q302L Troubleshooting

Released during 2014, identified by model number Q302L or Q302LA

The laptop takes too long to open applications and feels clunky

Why? In safe mode, your computer will run only the essential programs for Windows 10 to function properly.

  1. Open the Start menu and click the Power button
  2. While pressing the Shift key, click on Restart (This process can also be done from the Sign In screen
  3. Once the computer reboots, choose Troubleshoot
  4. On the Troubleshoot screen, select Advanced Options
  5. On the Advanced Options screen, choose Startup Settings
  6. Once there just select “Enable Safe Mode”

Once in Safe Mode, delete unnecessary programs and files that are no longer used or needed.

A Hard Drive is not only used to store files and download programs on. Windows uses a Hard Drive to make Caches when it boots up for better performance. If there is not enough Hard Drive space, the computer will lag more often.

  1. Use the above instructions to go back to Safe Mode. Once there you will need to acquire an External Hard Drive or USB Drive and plug it into a USB Port.
  2. Once plugged in, use the external storage to transfer photos, videos or any files that you do not need on your laptop for immediate use.
  3. Once that is compete, a Hard Drive defragment is recommended. Click the Start button and type “Optimize” or “Defrag” then click on Defragment and Optimize Drivers.
  4. Once the Optimize Drivers window comes up, you can analyze your Hard Drive, and if needed, optimize it.

RAM is used by computers for multi-tasking purposes. If there is insufficient amount of RAM then the computer will be slow and unable to run multiple programs at once. This problem can be fixed by simply upgrading the RAM size.

The laptop will not turn on even after a full charge

Batteries degrade over time and can eventually stop holding a charge. Power down your laptop and plug it into a power supply, then leave it to charge for a while. While the laptop is still plugged into the power supply, power it up again. Once laptop is powered on, remove the power supply for the charging port. If the laptop immediately shuts off then the battery can no longer hold a charge and should be replaced.

Batteries are not the only thing that can go bad, cords can be damaged and will no longer provide electrical power to a device. While the device is powered on, plug it into a power supply. Click on the battery icon in the bottom right corner and make sure it says that the device is charging. If the icon does not state that the device is charging then you have a faulty power supply and should replace it.

The laptop power on but nothing shows up on the screen or the screen flickers

Take a flash light and shine it sideways on the screen while the laptop is powered on. If you see anything show up on the screen that means the LED back-lighting is burned out or damaged. Back-lighting can burn out from overuse and LCD screens can be damaged from drops or excessive heat. In either case the LCD screen must be replaced.

Note: The LCD screen is behind the touch screen glass. If the outside touch screen glass is not damaged then it does not need to be replaced along with the LCD screen.

There is no sound coming from one or both speakers on the laptop

Drivers are installed on computers to ensure that the hardware function properly with the software. Head over to the Microsoft website and make sure that your audio drivers are up to date. If they are not, then proceed to install the new ones following the on-screen instructions.

If the drivers on the laptop are up to date and there is no sound still, then the speakers are faulty. In that case, they will need to be replaced. Asus laptop speakers are easy to locate and install.

The laptop gets too hot even when placed on a proper surface

Thermos-paste is placed on top of the Processor and transfers heat over to the cooling fan. If that paste is dry then heat will be unable to be transferred properly and the Processor will start overheating. To check, carefully remove the back cover of the laptop. Locate the cooling fan and remove it, revealing the Processor. If the paste looks dry then apply more and replace the cooling fan back on top.

Note: Make sure your device is powered off during this process.

In most scenarios, the thermos-paste is not the issue, it is the cooling fan that is no longer functioning properly. While the laptop is powered off, carefully remove the back cover. Use a can of air to blow away any dust that can be causing the blades to be stuck. While the cover is still off, power on the laptop and check if the fan starts to spin again. If not, then the fan is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Note: Do not use your device while the cooling fan is not functioning. Without sufficient cooling the Processor can overheat and eventually catch on fire.

Attempting to print but the printer is not responding to your laptop

Out of date drivers can cause the hardware in devices to not function properly. Head over to the website of the printer manufacturer and download the latest drivers and software required for your printer model.

Most printers these days use Wi-Fi connection to communicate with your device. However, both devices must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for this to be possible. If you have more than one router, then check both devices and make sure they are using the same network.

When taping on a specific spot, a different spot is activated instead on the screen

To fix the calibration of the touch screen, simply:

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. Type “Calibrate” and click on Calibrate the Screen for Touch or Pen Input
  3. Once the Tablet PC Settings window is open, click Calibrate and follow the on-screen instructions

Having issues connection to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices

Head over to the Microsoft website and make sure that your network and Bluetooth drivers are up to date. If they are not, then make sure to install all the necessary drivers for your laptop. Drives are required to ensure that the device’s hardware functions properly.

Make sure that your Wi-Fi if turned on and receiving signal from the nearby router.

  1. Open up the Start menu, then click Settings
  2. In the Settings window, click on Network & Internet
  3. On the left column of the Network & Internet window click on Wi-Fi
  4. At this point make sure that the Wi-Fi connection is turned on and is picking up signal

Bluetooth devices can be easily interrupted when more than one device is connected to your laptop. If you are unable to connect to a Bluetooth device or having interruptions with it, make sure that you disconnect any other unnecessary Bluetooth device that is connected to your laptop.


I don't mean to be critical, but everything on this troubleshooting tree is incredibly generic. I would really like to see some common problems specific to the model appear on these more often. I have a great example for this I saw a lot at my shop. A Q302L, any of the several submodels of it, has a Mediatek MT7630E combo WLAN/Blue Tooth 4.0 card that is notorious for intermittently dropping connections. It is especially perplexing because the ASUS support site lists only the Realtek, Broadcom and Ralink drivers and has no mention of Mediatek. The "fix" or workaround is simple enough, you go to Device Manager, disable the driver and then re-enable it. Occasionally after an update Windows would replace the driver with a generic one and then you would have to uninstall it and then scan for hardware changes to get the correct one back. This was fixed in a later version of the software so if you have upgraded to Windows 10 on your Q302L then you shouldn't have to worry about it. Something to think about.

What he said- this is simple troubleshooting tips(surprised the old"power off your device for 15 seconds". ahh you tube. Hey IHAI(i have an idea** videos needs repair videos...I would like to get the "service" manual for the laptop.
