I've been in the automtive service industry for 32 years. I've wrenched and bled,managed,and bled,consulted and bled. The good news is I never have bled out of my passion for the automotive service field. If it hadn't been for emerging technologies of late I'd have gone to flipping burgers. The advent of GDI, new thinking in turbocharging, and especially integration of our smartphones has renewed my excitement! I've worked for Mercedes Benz, Jeep, and GM dealerships, as well as independents. My passion is helping people keep their cars like new and fun to drive. The car manufacturers are interested in one thing-selling new cars! Please think about that when someone tells you that your car needs to be serviced once a year or every 10.000 miles. They must hate IFIXIT!
Answer to "How to restart after wrecking it"This is a swag but if the airbag deployed and it was replaced with something aftermarket,or even OEM, the body shop probably couldn't version code the new SRS module to the car etc.The cruise control code also could be related to the clock-spring (in the steering column).There's this possibility too-a generic scan tool-or better-an "un-enhanced" scan tool can give you very misleading information and drive a tech over the edge! Most aftermarket scan tools really can't interface with MB's reliably. I have, in a pinch been able to erase codes with aftermarket tools-but it always seems to take doing it twice to make it go away. That would be the only DIY tip I can offer up-erase twice. If no luck then its time to call the insurance company up & get it to the dealer or an independent who is highly trained and tooled. The 171's were cool cars, but it's still an MB and they take a special kind of person to diagnose and repair. I always wondered how the Chrysler Techs dealt with the Crossfire's when they came out.
Answer to "How do I quiet a squeaky car door?"Sorry, but WD-40, PAM, etc aren't sufficient! White lithium grease or better yet BG HCF will work great-IF THAT"S WHAT IS WRONG! Carefully look at the hinges (especially the upper one) where the hinge plate is welded onto the body. Look at both while opening and closing the door a little and even try wiggling the door up and down by having a friend grab the rear lower corner of the door. If you see movement between the hinge and body it's welding time! This was common and an easy fix if you catch it before it breaks away.
Answer to "Won't Idle Correctly After Attempted Repair-What Next"OK, I'll throw my 2 quid in! If your tech friend has a DRBII (Factory scan tool) have him do a minimum air flow test-I'll bet you some (whatever you eat for breakfast where you are)) that it'll FAIL! Good news, all you need to do is an induction/fuel injection service. Don't waste your money with junk from the parts store-use a 2901 kit from BG. One can through the fuel rail, one through the induction system (not a vacuum port-a fogger please), and some 44K in the tank. make sure when you put the tank additive in that you fill the tank and drive that first tank down as far as possible. the longer it stays in at that treat ratio, the better clean up it will do. And yeah, I'd check the vacuum circuits too, but you're probably gonna find the PCV system hoses clogged or broken. Please save yourself some misery and don't use regular tubing-go buy the factory PCV harness. Look at the small one that runs to the back of the engine-it may look fine, but it also may be clogged up with goop. Yes,GOOP! Also becareful...
Answer to "Why do my rear lights stay on when the car is off?"If it is the tail lights that are inop there are some common problems associated with this model Jeep. The most common is the tail light sockets. They often melt the housing they fit into and consequently lose ground. The only way to properly fix this is by replacing the entire taillight assembly''italic text''. They have come way down in price and I'm sure by now there are aftermarket solutions. I usually don't use aftermarket electrical parts, but Dorman has made some good stuff and proved me wrong. The very first thing I would check is that the instrument cluster lights are working when the lights are on. If not, check the fuse-they are on the same circuit. It could be that simple. Keep your eye on the cluster lights-when they're not working,neither are your tail lights! If you have the fancy "Automatic " lighting system it can get a little weird. There was a big problem with BCM's (Body Control Modules). When they go bye-bye, you might think that your Jeep is possessed! The lights will flash on and off...
