Answer to: Why is my sander scaring the surface of the my object? If the problem is not the sandpaper itself it might be a faulty dust seal/ break. This component not only keeps dust out of the motor but regulates the speed of orbit. One easy way to tell if this is the problem is by listening to the sander when it is off of a surface. If it seems to get louder than usual when off of a surface it may be time to change the dust seal/ break. This is a simple replacement and the steps to do so can be found here Porter-Cable 382 Dust Seal | Dust Break Replacement .
Answer to: Why is my sander not sanding? If your sander is not sanding there could be a few different problems. First one being you need a new piece of sandpaper, in which case you should replace the sandpaper. Your sand paper could also be too high of a grit making the abrasive surface not rough enough to do any real damage, try gradually using lower grits until the surface begins sanding. If you go too low and scratch marks appear just work your way up to higher grits. Your device could also not be operating properly in which case I would check this devices troubleshooting page to search for causes for various problems.
