Answer to: Is my iPod 3rd Generation compatible with Firewire 800 cable?…I have to add, though, that if your iPod original 3G has been long out of use and the battery is really unloaded, you'll need to plug in the mains charger to initiate a minimum load, after which you can charge it further with the aforementioned combination of cables and adapters plugged in your computer.

To avoid misplacing screws or other elements, printout the instructions, apply transparent tape onto the print wherever you have colored circles marking different screws. Then, as you start removing screws, tape each one on top of its image on the instructions. At the end, to reinstall everything, proceed from the end of the instructions, removing each taped screw from its image, to return it to its original position. I have done this with many iFixit repair instructions, never losing or misplacing any screw!
Would it not be advisable to drain the battery completely before attempting to repair, if you want to be sure you don't get a spark when removing the battery connector?
