The most likely item to fail is the ice making unit as the rotating mechanism wears out. When that happens all kinds of weird ice making behavior can occur. Not the infrared emitter or the water valve or the wiring harness…they have no moving parts…..I disagree with the door replace diagnosis. Has the ice maker ever been replaced?
The most likely cause is the rotating mechanism in the icemaker….its also the simplest to replace. Just determine model number and its an easy order…..check if yours is narrow one (5 cube) or full width (8cube). Then follow these instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DdUW9Il... when your part arrives…..the rotating mechanism is plastic and can break easily if for some reason there is an obstruction in the emptying into ice reservoir process.
Bud, I think your maker is the first thing thing to replace…it creates demand and the emitter controls it when its full…. Update (07/12/2019): emitters have come down in price significantly and there is nothing wrong with the generics….https://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-4389102-W10757851-Icemaker-Emitter/dp/B06XWDLVNR/ref=ya_st_pd_dx_bx...-1486-4f75-9075-48e73236353d&pd_rd_w=WrZT7&pd_rd_wg=JTQo...
I wonder if you've spilled some liquid at some time onto your firewire ports while the laptop was powered up...common method of short circuiting the BUS which controls the firewire ports....a question...is your wireless signal strength bar still showing on the menu bar? they are both related...if that wireless signal strength bar has disappeared and your firewires have no power...the BUS on the logic board that controls them might have shorted. If so, a new logic board or second hand one is the only way. If you do that, make sure you are careful with the ambient light sensor when you remove it...very delicate and easily damaged...it controls signal to backlighting of your keyboard... Many of those external hard drives wont get enough power from your usb...the one on the left is high speed ....if you were to connect to both usb on left and right then there should be enough power....firewire 800 or 400 supplies power to external drive or isight camera if functioning. The most concerning part of no firewire...
