This might be the what I was looking for. This might be their IMU. It should be noted that in order to provide the same accuracy and sample rate as the Gear VR the would have to bring one of the more expensive IMUs possibly from Bosch, which is also used in the Oculus and HTC HMDs
I don't know if there is enough resolution for me to check the other components on the board in your large images. If not, could you check to see what IMU package they are using?
One thing that sets the Gear VR apart is running its IMU at 1000 Hz and being externally shielded from the internal RF, heat and magnetic fields of the phone itself. It would be interesting how they counteracted these effect in their design as well providing the same accuracy and sampling rate.

Did you specify the IMU package?
Is this the new IPS LCD panel from JDI? I have read it uses the second generation Low Temperature Polysilicon backplanes, which in another article fueled a rumor that a higher resolution panel was going to used due to the power savings.
Is the lightening port data throughput the same as the previous iPhone 6s Plus, or the updated standard used in the iPad Pro?
Have you confirmed that there is analog audio available now from the lightning port?
So this is the device that replaced the audio jack?
The two panels are AUO 3.81" low-persistence (90Hz) AMOLED, which actually provides less PPI than either the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift CV. Also the pentile sub-pixel arrangement is different as well. Sadly the lower PPI and Pentile arrangement, along with very sharp lenses makes the screendoor effect more noticeable than the other two HMDs. The HDK2 is also many ounces more than the CV. The shining light on the HDK 2 is its $399 price, which is $200 cheaper than the CV and once the drivers are polished, including the Steam VR plug-in, this could be great entry into VR if you don't need hand controllers and room tracking. Having worked with Sensics and Razer for the past six months, I can say the are taking the OSVR initiative very serious and it is becoming a great developer and research HMD to further other types of controllers and platforms.
Great step-by-step guide, but I would like to caution anyone attempting this to be EXTREMELY careful with the screen itself. Unlike a smartphone screen which has other glass layers bonded to it to provide rigidity and protection to the AMOLED panel. This screen does not and has about a 1mm of glass above the AMOLED layer. This panel is very easy to crack with slightest of pressure so I recommend that the panel is in place in the plastic carrier and the two metal plates that hold the panel inside the plastic carrier secured, but not too tight before trying to attach the connector the other side the PCB.
I have noticed on this teardown as well as your LG 4 you do not identify the IMU. It would be great in the future you start doing this since it will be important to those who are looking for the best mobile VR smartphone.
