Introduction
The Mercury Recovery procedure ensures the safe extraction of mercury switches from appliances while working in the Market Delivery Operation (MDO) facilities.
Mercury switch found in washing machines may be located
- Between the washer tub and the cover for the tub area of the washer.
- Back of washing machine
Technicians should carefully inspect these areas to identify any mercury switches. If the technician finds a tab or button along the rim of the lid, this is an indication of a mechanical switch which results in no mercury switch.
Regardless of if mercury switches were found or not, the technician should place a completion sticker over the “May Contain Mercury Switches NEEDS INSPECTION” sticker to signify that the unit was inspected.
IMPORTANT: If Mercury is released during recovery, the technician should contact the MDOM and 3E for cleanup and rope off the area with cones (and caution tape, if available).
