Vincent Bach Trumpet Disassembly and Cleaning

Introduction

Proper cleaning is crucial to a trumpet's valve movement and sound quality. This guide can be used to ensure the quality of a trumpet.

What you need

    • Be careful when removing the parts. If any part becomes bent or damaged in any way the trumpet may require more professional repair.

    • Remove the mouthpiece and valves.

    • Remove the finger buttons and valve caps.

    • Set aside the felt pads on the valves and DO NOT wash them.

    • Remove the valve stems.

    • Set aside the springs and, like the felt pads, DO NOT wash them.

    • Remove the third valve ring.

    • Remove the first valve tuning slide.

    • Remove the main tuning slide.

    • Remove the second and third valve tuning slides.

    • Remove the three valve caps at the bottom of the valves.

    • Fill a bathtub or large, clean container with lukewarm water and a bit of dish soap.

    • Line the bottom of the container with thick towels.

    • Without the towels the trumpet parts are even more susceptible to damage. Handle with care.

    • Gently place all of the pieces, except for the felt pads and springs, into the water.

    • Use a snake brush to clean out the body of the trumpet.

    • Use a valve brush to clean out the three valves.

    • Use a mouthpiece brush to clean out the mouthpiece.

    • Pay special attention to the mouthpiece area and where two slides connect because these are where most buildup occurs.

    • Use a wash rag to dry off all of the pieces and place each dried off piece onto a large, dry towel.

    • Gently run a cleaning cloth over the trumpet.

    • Let the pieces dry outside for around two hours or until fully dry.

    • Reconstruct the trumpet by following steps 1-6 in reverse.

    • Apply valve oil to the valves and tuning slide grease to the tuning slides.

The care instructions from the Bach Company, which came with my Bach trumpet, say to use lukewarm water only when cleaning the trumpet, specifically saying not to use dish detergent.
