Repair Methodology

To repair any device, from the simplest to the most sophisticated, it is first necessary, even before taking anything apart, to ask yourself the following 3 questions. This is the information gathering phase. It is just as important as the repair itself.

• What are the different functions of the device?
• What is its user manual?
• What is the problem encountered?

What are the functions of the device?

In the case of simple objects, it may seem unnecessary to ask this question, but for more complex ones, it is important to understand the origin of the failure. This helps as much as possible to avoid heading down the wrong path.

What is the user manual?

This is the logical follow-up to the first question. Once you have understood all the device's functions, you should understand how to use it. To do this, you can refer to the user manual if it is present, or ask its owner to explain its operation, if they know it themselves—and that is not always the case.

What is the problem?

Finally, you can ask the last question regarding the device's malfunction(s).

You must determine whether the device is completely or partially broken (hence the importance of the first question), what the symptoms are, if an event led to the failure, and anything else that can help pinpoint the source of the problem.
During this step, it is necessary to test the object, observe what happens (1), and confirm the nature of the problem(s) with the user, verifying what works and what does not work, to avoid any misunderstanding in subsequent operations.
After having collected this initial information, it is likely that you will be able to establish an initial Troubleshooting which will allow you to move on to the next phase.
