Reset Absorber Purge Counter, "Waste Ink Counter"

What you need

  1. Reset Absorber Purge Counter, "Waste Ink Counter", Reset Absorber Purge Counter, "Waste Ink Counter": step 1, image 1 of 1
    • MFC-J475DW. Front view of control Panel.

    • When the error(s) Absorber Near Full or Absorber Full appears on the display you will need to replace the Absorber Box (Waste Ink Box) inside the printer. This is rather difficult to access however it is necessary to prevent ink over flow inside the printer when full. Resetting the counter only and not replacing the box can cause damage.

    • When the display reads Absorber Near Full you will still be able to use the printer as it is just a warning that the box needs to be replaced. If the display reads Absorber Full the printer will be out of order until the box is replaced and the counter reset. Again resetting the counter without replacing the box can cause damage to the printer.

    • After you have replaced the Absorber box please follow the following steps to reset the counter. Make sure to exit the error screen by pressing the Stop key so that the main screen is visible.

    • 1. Press the buttons Menu/Black/Menu one at a time, the display will read "Maintenance".

    • 2. Enter 80 on the numeric key pad. The display now will read "OK".

    • 3. Using the down arrow on the control panel press it approximately 45 times until the word Purge appears followed by a number such as 105000. This number is the total count on the purge counter. This is what will need to be reset using the next step.

    • 4. Using the numeric key pad enter 2783. this will reset the purge counter to 00000.

    • 5. Press the Menu button then the Stop Button. Then turn the power off and back on to ensure a complete reset.

Conclusion

No reassembly needed. The typical life expectancy of the Absorber box is approximately 30K copies when using genuine Brother ink. Approximately 10K copies using generic ink.

As I stated before replacing the Absorber box is difficult on this model printer. There are videos available online to help you with this task.

Finally there is also a print head wiper felt box that will need to be cleaned while the printer is disassembled. This is located on he left side, inside the printer, also available in the online videos.
