Introduction

In the event that the GPS unit of your Nike SportWatch stops picking up a signal, it may require a replacement. This guide involves opening the watch and removing the main board on the watch. A wire connects the GPS to the main board, so after the replacement is finished, soldering the wire back to the main board may be necessary.

If you don't have experience soldering, refer to our How to Solder and Desolder Connections guide. Be sure to turn the watch off before beginning this repair.

Before beginning, ensure your work area is static-free to protect internal components and verify the watch is completely powered off.

Using a size #000 Phillips screwdriver, remove the six 5 mm screws on the back of the device.

Then, gently pull the watch band and front screen apart.

Using a size #000 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two 2.5 mm screws on the main board.

Carefully, use the blue plastic opening tool to pry the main board out of the front panel.
Use extreme care when handling the ribbon cable. Avoid twisting or pulling it, as it is delicate and cannot be removed or replaced if damaged.

Using the spudger, remove the orange tape that covers the wire for the GPS.

Using the soldering iron, break the wire connecting the GPS to the main board at the connector.
When desoldering the GPS wire, set the soldering iron to a moderate heat level (around 350°C/662°F). To prevent damage, avoid prolonged contact with the board. For detailed instructions, refer to the iFixit soldering guide.

To reassemble, follow the steps in reverse order. Ensure all connections are secure, screws are tightened evenly, and no ribbon cables are pinched. Once complete, test the watch by powering it on and verifying GPS functionality in an open area.

After reassembly, power on the watch and perform a GPS test outdoors in a clear area. Wait for the watch to acquire a signal to confirm the successful replacement.
