Removing the ash tray on a W123 is easy, but the method is not immediately obvious. This guide will show you how. Also, you'll learn how to remove the backing plate that the ash tray sits in in case you need to get greater access to the area behind it.


No parts required.

Image 1/1: Then move the shift lever all the way back in to L to give you room to work.
  • With the car turned off, engage the parking brake. Failure to do this could be dangerous as you need to move the gear lever out of park to continue this guide.

  • Now pull the ash tray open as you normally would.

  • Now push down on the tab that is at the center of the ash tray assembly.

  • While continuing to hold down the tab you can pull the ash tray forward, and out of the opening it sits in.

  • If you want to remove the entire assembly including the bracket that the ash tray rests in you can proceed to remove the two screws that hold it to the center console.
