Repairing Macintosh PowerBook 1400 Series RAM

What you need

  1. Repairing Macintosh PowerBook 1400 Series RAM, Battery: step 1, image 1 of 1
    • Turn the device upside down and then locate the battery latch near the front of the device.

    • Slide the latch to the left to release the battery.

    • Continue holding the latch then gently pull the battery out of the device.

    • Place the battery in a safe location.

    • Locate the CD-ROM Drive latch.

    • Slide the latch to the right to release the CD ROM drive.

    • Continue holding the latch then gently pull the CD-ROM Drive out of the device.

    • Place the CD ROM drive in a safe location.

    • Locate the speaker cover.

    • Press firmly on each end of the speaker cover and slide it to the left.

    • Gently lift the speaker cover to remove it.

    • Lift the keyboard up from the back using a spudger(wedge side).

    • Gently lift the keyboard until only the ribbon cable remains attached.

    • Tilt the keyboard away from the screen.

    • Locate the six screws that secure the heatsink.

    • Remove the six screws from the heatsink using the Philips #1 screwdriver.

    • Lift the heatsink from the side closest to the laptop screen.

    • Remove the heatsink.

    • Gently pull up on the beige ribbon lock until it moves a short distance on both sides to separate the ribbon cable from the connector.

    • Detach the ribbon cable.

    • Remove the keyboard.

    • Identify RAM Memory stick

    • These are the upgradeable RAM Memory sticks, they must be removed first

    • Gently grasp the ram on the far end as shown in the picture and then pull up and away from the right side of the computer

    • Remove the upgradeable RAM stick

    • If the upgradeable RAM stick is all you are repairing you can end the guide here, however to remove the factory installed RAM please continue

    • Gently grasp the factory installed RAM by grabbing each end as shown in the picture and pull the stick directly up

  24. Repairing Macintosh PowerBook 1400 Series RAM: step 24, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the factory installed RAM memory module
