What you need
-
-
This model requires an M.2 NVMe SSD.
-
Not all physical sizes fit in the laptop! Mine came with a 2242 installed via an adapter. (see photo) The longest it can accommodate is the 2280.
-
Sizes in between will require you to purchase a different adapter, so I recommend sticking to the 2280 length.
-
As mentioned above, you can open the device, check which size you already have and buy matching one. If you do this, you should familiarize yourself with SSD sizes and types first.
-
-
-
Loosen the eight screws circled in red. A #1 Phillips screwdriver works for all screws in this guide.
-
These are all captive screws, meaning they can't come completely out of the screw holes. The washers holding them can break though, so take care not to lose any if that happens!
-
They are very small screws, so minimal turns fully loosen them.
-
NOTE: You should check your warranty, if it is still in effect. Any damage caused might void it. This should not occur if you follow the instructions carefully.
-
-
-
-
Once you have loosened the screws sufficiently you need to remove the bottom of the case. Do NOT forcefully pull it off by hand. There are plastic tabs holding it that are easily damaged!
-
I recommend an IFixit plastic opening tool or something similar. Do NOT use a metal tool!
-
Start at the rear of the device (Green line in photos) and insert your tool into the seam between the base and bottom cover. Pry until you hear a tab pop loose. This requires a bit of force, but not too much! Slide to the next tab and repeat. Continue doing this until the entire back seam is released.
-
Next, continue the process along the sides (Red lines), feeling for each tab along the way.
-
Once you've freed enough clips, the bottom cover of the computer should pop off. It has some malleable metal sheets, so handle it with care.
-
-
-
Once you have the bottom off of the laptop, focus on the area in photo one. Yours may differ slightly, but this is the SSD.
-
I advise gloves for this (ignore my hypocrisy!). Nitrile or Latex are fine, but NOT powdered! Be careful not to catch and tear them on anything inside.
-
You have one last screw to remove (Orange circle) before removing the drive. This screw will be here no matter what type SSD is already installed.
-
After removing the screw, you can remove the SSD. Do this by first, gently pulling UP by where the screw was; and then pulling AWAY as shown in the picture with green arrows. Be gentle and do not force it.
-
-
-
Carefully install the new SSD. It is keyed with a slot so ensure it is aligned properly, then gently push it into the slot and then press the far end down. Make sure the screw hole is properly positioned!
-
If you've correctly installed it, you should see as in the photo, green rectangle: No exposed copper and screw holes aligned.
-
If your copper contacts are exposed, as in the photo with the Red "X", push the SSD gently deeper into the socket (assuming you aren't trying to put it in upside down (keyed notch?) in which event, turn it over and try again.)
-
Now put the silver screw back in the hole. It should be screwed all the way down, but not tight enough to damage things.
-
-
-
You can now put the bottom plate cover on the device.
-
Use your hands to press the tabs back into place. Begin at the front, then work up the sides, then the rear... reversing how you took it apart.
-
Once it's latched into place, re-tighten those eight screws!
-
I hope everything went well and that I was of some help!
