Introduction
Go to step 1 ↓Modern high efficiency washing machines appear to build up some crud. In my LG washing machine this crud is under what is called the pulsator or agitator plate. This guide will show you how to remove the plate to be cleaned, and then replace it. I have not yet found a good cleaning agent.
This may only be applicable to washing machines with plastic plates at the bottom.
Disassembly and reassembly is just a few minutes. Most of the time is cleaning the bottom of the plate.
The pictures are taken from an LG model WT7000CW.

Remove the plastic cover in the center of plate. Fingernails underneath the edge pulling up should do it. If your fingernails can't do, try using some thin plastic. Avoid using anything metallic besides a dull knife to avoid damage.
-
Now you can see the head of the 10mm bolt
-
-
-
The plate will try to rotate as you unscrew the bolt so hold the plate in place. It has fins used to agitate the water so it is not difficult.
-

-
Pulling up the plate can be difficult because it has no place to grab. Other guides on the internet suggest putting some screws into holes in the plate, or some other ideas that can damage the plate. Here's how to make a custom tool with simple house hold items.
-
Gather up two binder clips and about three feet of paracord or similar. Some stiff wire can be substituted for the binder clips.
-
Disasemble the binder clips. You will use three of the handles.
-
Tie the Paracord into a loop. Use a square knot so it does not come apart.
-
Bend three of the handles around the paracord so they cannot fall off.
-
Last image is the completed tool.
-
-
-
Insert each of the three bent binder clip handles into a slot in the center of the plate.
-
The custom tool is not required. You could just thread some string through the holes and pull on the string. This is a good deal slower that putting the clip handles in the slot.
-
Pull straight up and the plate will come loose.
-

-
-
The bottom of the plate has many crevices that hold the crud. Hot water and old toothbrush while working in a bath tub is pretty effective but no perfect. Suggestions for cleaning products to use are welcome.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
Be careful to only gently tighten the bolt!
