How to sew a detached strap to a dress

Introduction

If you have a dress with a straps that are ripped off, detached, or needs to be securely sewn on, this guide will help you accomplish that task. Skills in basic sewing by hand will be useful in completing this fix, but not required to have beforehand. Time to complete fix is dependent on sewing ability and size/thickness of straps.

What you need

    • Indicate the 4 places on the dress where you want to attach the 2 straps.

    • Selecting places on the dress where hanger straps are sewn are good spots to consider.

    • Consider marking the spots either with a pen or safety pin so that you don't lose the positions midway.

    • Have the owner of the dress wear it.

    • Use a measuring tape to measure the length between the front and back of the dress on both sides at the places indicated.

    • If the dress belongs to you, having another person measure for you might be helpful.

    • Adjust the 2 straps according to the necessary length needed for both sides of the dress, then add an additional 1 inch of length to each strap.

    • Pin down both of the straps at the designated areas leaving ½ inch of strap below on each end of the straps.

    • When using pins, be aware they may stick out and poke you while sewing.

    • Cut 2 pieces of thread that are 12 inches in length.

    • Use a needle to tie a knot to one end of the thread: start by pinching one end of the thread, then wrap it a few times around the needle before pulling it all the way down so that the thread slides off the needle.

    • The more times you wrap the thread around the needle, the bigger the knot will be.

    • Put one end of the thread through the eye of the needle.

    • There may be a chance that the thread is already through the needle from the previous step, which in that case you can skip this step.

    • Make sure the end of the thread with the knot is longer than the other end while you work.

    • Start sewing the strap to the dress by poking the needle from the inside of the garment, puncturing the strap and the garment, then pulling the needle all the way through.

    • When you pull the needle with the thread all the way, that means to make sure you pull it until the thread is tight.

    • In some cases, removing the pin from the strap may make it easier to sew. In that case, hold the strap in place with your fingers as you sew.

    • Poke the needle back through the dress so that it does not catch the strap then pull the needle all the way through.

    • Poke the needle through the dress so that it goes through the garment and catches the strap again then pull the needle all the way.

    • Repeat steps 13-14 again 2 more times. This will ensure the other end of the strap is secure to the dress fabric.

    • Start the finishing knot by poking the needle through the strap and catching the inside of the fabric.
