Introduction
Sometimes it's difficult to remove a nail that's been driven into wood if it's very thick, long, or has a broken head. Often, regular pliers won't help.
A trick can sometimes help: using a crowbar and grip pliers in combination.
The basic idea: if the nail head is missing or is too far away, you can use the grip pliers to create a new nail head that you can then pry on with a crowbar.

Use the screw in the handle to adjust the grip pliers to the appropriate jaw width so that the nail can then be clamped.

Press both handles together to clamp the nail. The gripping pliers should click into place.

Try to pry the nail out using hand and arm strength.

Alternatively, use the other side of the crowbar to pry the nail out.

Place it between the nail and the grip pliers again and pry.
