How to Sew a Hole in a Shirt Pocket

Introduction

If you have a hole in your shirt pocket, this guide will help you repair it using the whip stitch method.

A damaged shirt pocket can ruin your day by allowing small items to fall through. Proper, easy repair will restore the function of your pocket while barely impacting the appearance.

Before starting the repair process, gather all necessary supplies. Inspect the hole and remove any loose threads. Measure the hole to determine the number of sewing pins needed and the proper amount of thread. This process is examined more closely in steps 1-4.

Steps 5 and 6 of the guide will explain how to repair the tear using the whip stitch method.

Find the hole in the pocket.

Take two pins. Insert one pin into the far left edge of the tear.
Insert your second pin into the far right edge of the tear.
Use extra pins to secure the tear together.

Choose a thread that is similar to the existing shirt color.

Thread a needle with twice the amount of thread the size of your hole.

Start the repair approximately 1/4 inch before the beginning of the hole. Insert the needle from the inside of the lower left edge of the pocket.
Then, take the needle across to the top edge of the hole. Insert the needle into the fabric just above the tear.
Pull the thread up all the way until it is snug.
Do not pull too tight or the fabric will pucker.
Repeat the stitch by inserting the needle slightly to the right of your first stitch. Push the needle from the inside of the pocket through the bottom edge of the hole.
Cross back up to the top edge again, inserting the needle from the outside of the pocket to the inside.
