How to Sew Torn Lace

Introduction

Lace is a fairly common fabric used in clothing, household decorations, and more. Its delicate patterns and intricate designs make it a favorite choice for adding elegance to everyday items. However, it is also susceptible to getting caught in things in one’s surrounding environment, which causes tears or damage to the lace. This leads to a significant amount of lace being discarded creating many environmental concerns.

Due to this, we have created a guide to help individuals facing the same issues repair their lace pieces and bring them back to working condition. As we are repairing a fabric, this guide will use, although not require, knowledge of basic sewing techniques.

What you need

    • Cut a piece of thread around two feet in length.

    • Push the thread through the hole of the sewing needle.

    • Use a thread of matching color to the lace. This guide shows a thread that contrasts with the color of the lace for easier visibility.

    • Pull the thread until the ends meet.

    • Tie two overlapping knots at the end of the thread.

    • Place your lace on a flat and smooth surface.

    • Stick a pin near the hole, holding the lace in place.

    • Be careful with your fingers when inserting the pin.

    • Stitch the two sides of the hole together until you reach the end.

    • Keep stitches close together to avoid gaps in your stitch.

    • Be careful of the needle tip when sewing.

    • Be careful of where you hands are placed when sticking the needle through.

    • Tie two overlapping knots to finish the stitch.

    • Keep the knot as close to the lace as possible.

    • Cut off any excess thread at the end of your stitch.
