How to Fix the Hotpoint and Indesit Washing Machine F05 Error Code

Video Guide
This guide was transcribed from a YouTube video.

What you need

    • Treat the F05 code as a drainage fault when the washer stops mid-cycle, stays full of water, or doesn't pump water to the drain.

    • A blockage is more likely if the pump area made a loud noise before the machine stopped.

    • Some Hotpoint models use F05 for a pressure switch fault instead of a pump blockage.

    • If the machine drains normally after the filter is clear but F05 returns, investigate a pressure switch fault.

    • Unplug the washing machine from power supply power before opening the filter area or touching water.

    • Pull the washing machine out only far enough to reach the hoses and front filter area.

    • Do not tug the machine forward because the water supply hose and drain hose can pull loose.

    • Turn off the power supply water supply to the washing machine.

    Ask FixBot
    • Inspect the drain hose for kinks or blockages.

    • Look into the wall drain or waste pipe and make sure it isn't blocked.

    • A blocked drain hose or wall drain can cause the same symptoms as a blocked pump filter.

    Ask FixBot
    • Place a large washing bowl near the drain hose.

    • Lower the drain hose into the bowl to drain as much water as possible.

    • Empty the bowl as it fills and keep draining until the flow slows.

    • Expect a lot of water if the machine stopped mid-cycle.

    Ask FixBot
    • Use a large flat blade screwdriver to pry off the lower front cover.

    • Locate the pump filter behind the lower front cover.

    • Lean the washing machine back carefully and slide an empty washing bowl under the pump filter.

    • A washing machine is heavy, so get help if you can't control it safely.

    Ask FixBot
    • Unscrew the pump filter by hand about three turns and pull it out.

    • If the filter won't turn easily, use firm hand pressure and wiggle it gently.

    • Rock the washing machine slightly if debris is jamming the filter.

    • A stuck filter is a strong sign that something is caught inside.

    Ask FixBot
    • Remove any debris trapped in the pump filter.

    • Reach into the filter opening and feel for objects against the pump propeller at the back.

    • Remove coins, hair clips, and other objects from the chamber.

    • Wear protective gloves if you need to reach into the pump chamber because trapped objects can be sharp.

    • Small fingers can make this easier because the access is tight.

    • Check pockets before washing to keep loose items out of the pump.

    Ask FixBot
    • Lean the washing machine forward carefully to drain the remaining water into the bowl.

    • Wait until water stops running from the filter opening.

    • Keep emptying the bowl because a mid-cycle stop can leave a lot of water in the machine.

    Ask FixBot
    • Screw the pump filter back in by hand until it is fully tight.

    • Confirm the filter turns easily after the blockage is removed.

    • Leave the lower front cover off until the leak test is complete.

    Ask FixBot
    • Put the drain hose back into the drain pipe.

    • Clip the drain hose into the U-bend bracket at the top.

    • Turn the power supply water supply back on.

    • The washer may show an H2O error if the water supply is left off.

    Ask FixBot
    • Continue the interrupted cycle or start a new cycle.

    • Use a rinse cycle to check whether the drain pump still works.

    • On this Hotpoint Aquarius model, the rinse cycle was cycle A and took 36 minutes.

    • Leave the washer pulled out and the lower cover off during the test.

    • Watch the pump filter and rear pipes for leaks while the machine fills and rinses.

    Ask FixBot
    • Check that water drains from the waste pipe during the drain portion of the rinse.

    • Listen for loud noises around the pump filter.

    • A loud pump noise before the F05 fault can be caused by an object hitting the pump propeller.

    • If the washer still doesn't drain after clearing the filter and drain path, stop using it and inspect the pump or pressure switch fault.

    Ask FixBot
    • Clean the pump filter about once a year, even if the washer is draining normally.

    • Stop the cycle and clean the filter if you hear unusual noise near the pump filter.

    • Cleaning the filter early can help prevent pump damage.

    Ask FixBot
    • Push the washing machine back into position when the rinse test drains correctly and no leaks appear.

    • Keep the water supply hose and drain hose straight as you move the machine.

    • Clip the lower front cover back into place.

    Ask FixBot
Conclusion

Run a normal wash only after the machine completes the rinse test without leaks. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
