Introduction
Use this guide to clear a drainage blockage that can trigger the F05 error code on Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines. The pump filter, also called the drain pump filter or filter pump, catches items like coins and hair clips before they reach the drain pump. A blocked filter can stop the washer mid-cycle and leave the drum full of water. This guide was written using a Hotpoint Aquarius washing machine; Indesit and some Whirlpool models may be similar, but panel shapes and program names can differ.
What you need
-
Step 1 Identify a drainage related F05 error
-
Treat the F05 code as a drainage fault when the washer stops mid-cycle, stays full of water, or doesn't pump water to the drain.
-
If the machine drains normally after the filter is clear but F05 returns, investigate a pressure switch fault.
-
-
Step 2 Unplug and pull the washer out
-
Pull the washing machine out only far enough to reach the hoses and front filter area.
-
Turn off the power supply water supply to the washing machine.
-
-
Step 3 Check the drain path
-
Inspect the drain hose for kinks or blockages.
-
Look into the wall drain or waste pipe and make sure it isn't blocked.
-
-
Step 4 Drain standing water into a bowl
-
Place a large washing bowl near the drain hose.
-
Lower the drain hose into the bowl to drain as much water as possible.
-
Empty the bowl as it fills and keep draining until the flow slows.
-
-
Step 5 Remove the lower front cover
-
Use a large flat blade screwdriver to pry off the lower front cover.
-
Locate the pump filter behind the lower front cover.
-
Lean the washing machine back carefully and slide an empty washing bowl under the pump filter.
-
-
Step 6 Unscrew the pump filter
-
Unscrew the pump filter by hand about three turns and pull it out.
-
If the filter won't turn easily, use firm hand pressure and wiggle it gently.
-
Rock the washing machine slightly if debris is jamming the filter.
-
-
Step 7 Clear the filter and pump chamber
-
Remove any debris trapped in the pump filter.
-
Reach into the filter opening and feel for objects against the pump propeller at the back.
-
Remove coins, hair clips, and other objects from the chamber.
-
-
Step 8 Drain the remaining water
-
Lean the washing machine forward carefully to drain the remaining water into the bowl.
-
Wait until water stops running from the filter opening.
-
-
Step 9 Reinstall the pump filter
-
Screw the pump filter back in by hand until it is fully tight.
-
Confirm the filter turns easily after the blockage is removed.
-
-
Step 10 Reconnect the drain hose and water
-
Put the drain hose back into the drain pipe.
-
Clip the drain hose into the U-bend bracket at the top.
-
Turn the power supply water supply back on.
-
-
Step 11 Run a rinse test
-
Continue the interrupted cycle or start a new cycle.
-
Use a rinse cycle to check whether the drain pump still works.
-
Leave the washer pulled out and the lower cover off during the test.
-
Watch the pump filter and rear pipes for leaks while the machine fills and rinses.
-
-
Step 12 Confirm draining
-
Check that water drains from the waste pipe during the drain portion of the rinse.
-
Listen for loud noises around the pump filter.
-
If the washer still doesn't drain after clearing the filter and drain path, stop using it and inspect the pump or pressure switch fault.
-
-
Step 13 Prevent future F05 blockages
-
Clean the pump filter about once a year, even if the washer is draining normally.
-
Stop the cycle and clean the filter if you hear unusual noise near the pump filter.
-
-
Step 14 Refit the cover and push the washer back
-
Push the washing machine back into position when the rinse test drains correctly and no leaks appear.
-
Clip the lower front cover back into place.
-
Run a normal wash only after the machine completes the rinse test without leaks. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
