Introduction
The pump filter, also called the coin catcher, traps lint, coins, face masks, hair clips, and other debris before they reach the pump. Clean it if the washing machine shows an E03 error, possibly an E20 error, drains poorly, smells bad, or makes strange noises near the pump. This guide was written with a Candy Alise washer dryer, but Candy washing machines with the same filter are similar; some models may have a drainage hose.
What you need
-
Step 2 Locate the pump filter
-
Open the filter flap at the bottom-left front of the washing machine.
-
Place an old towel below the flap.
-
Slide a shallow tray under the filter and keep a sponge nearby.
-
-
Step 3 Use the drainage hose if present
-
Look for a small drainage hose beside the filter.
-
If the washer has one, pull the hose out and unclip the end cap.
-
Drain the water into the shallow tray or a bucket.
-
Refit the end cap and clip the hose back in place after the water stops.
-
-
Step 4 Drain water through the filter
-
Slowly turn the filter counterclockwise just enough to let water drain out.
-
Turn the filter clockwise to close it as soon as the shallow tray is full.
-
Empty the tray into a sink or bucket.
-
Use the sponge and old towel to dry the floor before draining more water.
-
Repeat loosening, draining, tightening, and emptying until little or no water comes out.
-
-
Step 5 Free a stuck filter
-
Tighten the filter slightly if it won't unscrew.
-
Gently loosen and tighten the filter repeatedly until the debris clears the threads.
-
-
Step 6 Remove and inspect the filter
-
Unscrew the filter fully and pull it out after the water has drained.
-
Remove loose lint, dirt, and debris from the filter.
-
Check for coins, hair clips, face masks, and similar items.
-
-
Step 7 Clean the filter
-
Wet the filter with hot, soapy water.
-
Scrub the filter with a brush until all dirt and debris are gone.
-
Make sure the filter is completely clear before reinstalling it.
-
-
Step 8 Clean the filter housing
-
Check inside the filter opening for debris, dirt, and mold.
-
Use your fingers to remove any loose debris you can reach.
-
Scrub inside the filter area with the brush until it is clean.
-
Check the impeller propeller at the back and make sure it spins freely.
-
Remove any coins, hair clips, face masks, lint, or other debris found inside.
-
-
Step 9 Refit the filter
-
Insert the clean filter into the opening and turn it clockwise.
-
Remove the filter and try again if it doesn't thread in easily.
-
Tighten the filter until it locks in the horizontal position.
-
Check that the filter is locked, then close the flap.
-
-
Step 10 Clean up and restore power
-
Wipe the floor dry with the sponge and old towel.
-
Hang the old towel to dry.
-
Plug the washing machine back in and switch it on.
-
-
Step 11 Prevent future blockages
-
Clean the pump filter once a year if possible.
-
Run a hygienically fresh washing program every 30 washing cycles.
-
Check pockets before starting a wash to keep coins and hair clips out of the filter.
-
The pump filter should now be clean and ready for use. Clean it annually, and clean it sooner if drainage problems, smells, E03 or E20 errors, or pump-area noises return. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
