Introduction

If you have a laptop or desktop you want to remove the case stickers from, this guide will show you how to do it as cleanly as possible.

IMPORTANT: If your system is new, this is the best time to do this. There may be a visible contrast on older light colored systems, especially if it's older. This is cosmetic, but may be an issue if you have extreme OCD.

On many PCs, the OEM puts case stickers on. These are prone to wear over time and are only used for advertisement purposes. A sticker free laptop is going to look cleaner and more professional.

Guide notes:

  • In most cases, the Intel/AMD stickers leave residue behind. This is normal and still happens with heat. While it's almost always left behind, the soft glue is easy to clean. While this is less common with Windows XP/Vista/7 stickers, it can still happen.
  • Be careful how much heat you use to avoid melting anything. Many systems use plastic palmrests. If this happens you will need to replace the melted part. To avoid damaging the plastics, only use enough heat to make removal easy. The glue can be cleaned up later.
  • If you are doing this on a laptop with a removable battery, it MUST be removed (even if it is dead). These batteries can explode if they get too hot. The procedure on every laptop varies, so it is not covered.
  • This procedure is not specific to the Intel/AMD/Windows stickers. It can be used to remove other stickers. While these can be more difficult depending on the manufacturer and age of the sticker, it can still be done.
  • DO NOT USE Goof Off under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. This will ruin most (if not all plastics). Goo Gone is a safer alternative.
    • If you are in doubt on if solvents should be used, tape can also be used to remove the residual glue.

    • After removing the battery, heat the system up with a hairdryer. Do not use anything else. Do this until the area is hot to the touch so the glue is soft.

    • Peel off the stickers once the palmrest is heated up.

    • The bottle my Goo Gone came from broke. The bottle was replaced since it was fairly full.

    • After the sticker(s) have been removed, clean the leftover glue. Use a gentle citrus based solvent to avoid damage.

    • Put a good amount on the palmrest or front panel. Only use enough to clean it effectively.

    • Wipe the glue off after a few seconds. The use of heat should make this easy.
