Introduction

Remove and replace a headlight bulb on the third-generation Dodge Ram 1500.

Image 1/3: Reach under the center of the grille and press the hood latch. Image 2/3: Reach under the center of the grille and press the hood latch. Image 3/3: Reach under the center of the grille and press the hood latch.
  • Open the hood by pulling the hood lever in the driver-side footwell.

  • Reach under the center of the grille and press the hood latch.

  • In this guide we will be removing the left headlight. The steps are mirrored for the right headlight.

Image 1/3: Unscrew the second screw located approximately 6 inches below the first. Image 2/3: Locate the third screw at the bottom left corner of the headlight assembly just behind the bumper and remove. Image 3/3: When re-installing the screws do not over tighten.  Over tightening the screws will result in stripped threads.
  • Use the 10 mm socket wrench to unscrew the first of three 12 mm long 10 mm hex-head screws holding in the headlight assembly. The screw is located just to the left of the headlight assembly.

  • Unscrew the second screw located approximately 6 inches below the first.

  • Locate the third screw at the bottom left corner of the headlight assembly just behind the bumper and remove.

  • When re-installing the screws do not over tighten. Over tightening the screws will result in stripped threads.

Image 1/2: Be careful if the rubber gasket is dry-rotted.  Use vaseline to re-moisturize if necessary.  Manipulating dry-rotted rubber will result in tearing. Image 2/2: Pinch the bottom of the rubber gasket at the left side of the assembly and remove it from the plastic "buttons" on the headlight assembly.
  • Approach this step with the process of unbuttoning a shirt in mind.

  • Be careful if the rubber gasket is dry-rotted. Use vaseline to re-moisturize if necessary. Manipulating dry-rotted rubber will result in tearing.

  • Pinch the bottom of the rubber gasket at the left side of the assembly and remove it from the plastic "buttons" on the headlight assembly.

Image 1/2: Locate the green turn signal wire clamp. Use a flathead screwdriver to push in the tab on the side and pull off the connector. Image 2/2: Now that all connections between the car and the headlight assembly are disconnected, it is safe to remove the headlight assembly from the truck.
  • Locate the blue headlight wire. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up one side of the clamping teeth and pull the connector off.

  • Locate the green turn signal wire clamp. Use a flathead screwdriver to push in the tab on the side and pull off the connector.

  • Now that all connections between the car and the headlight assembly are disconnected, it is safe to remove the headlight assembly from the truck.

Image 1/2: Carefully pull the headlight bulb holder out of its socket. Image 2/2: When installing a headlight bulb, '''do not touch the bulb with your bare skin'''. Wear gloves when installing a new headlight bulb. Halogen bulbs are sensitive to skin oils, and the bulb may burn out quickly if you touch the bulb during installation.
  • Rotate the outer ring of the headlight bulb holder counterclockwise to remove it.

  • Carefully pull the headlight bulb holder out of its socket.

  • When installing a headlight bulb, do not touch the bulb with your bare skin. Wear gloves when installing a new headlight bulb. Halogen bulbs are sensitive to skin oils, and the bulb may burn out quickly if you touch the bulb during installation.

  • If you accidentally touch the bulb, clean it immediately using rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth.
