Front License Plate Installation

What you need

    • Gather your tools. Drill, Sharpie, Drill Bits, Painters Tape.

    • Get the parts, too. The front license plate bracket and the 4 plastic spreader rivets.

    • Don't forget the Touareg :)

    • Use Painters Tape to mark your drill bits at 1/2" of depth - so you don't drill into the bumper too far.

  2. Front License Plate Installation: step 2, image 1 of 2 Front License Plate Installation: step 2, image 2 of 2
    • Position the license plate frame and center it on the VW emblem and parking camera (below, if installed). You can use the vertical supports in the lower grill (hard to see in this pic) to assist in alignment.

    • Hold the license plate frame in place using some painters tape.

    • Using the Sharpie, mark the four holes that you'll be drilling.

  3. Front License Plate Installation: step 3, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the frame for easier drilling.

    • Using the 1/8" drill bit, drill four pilot holes in the center of each position.

    • Finish the holes by enlarging them with the 11/32" drill bit.

  4. Front License Plate Installation: step 4, image 1 of 2 Front License Plate Installation: step 4, image 2 of 2
    • Place the frame back into position.

    • Install the four plastic spreader rivets.

    • Ensure they are seated by using a socket (as shown) to ensure rivets are fully seated before pushing in the center pin.

  5. Front License Plate Installation: step 5, image 1 of 3 Front License Plate Installation: step 5, image 2 of 3 Front License Plate Installation: step 5, image 3 of 3
    • Tap the center pins of the rivets so they are flush with the rivet body.

    • Use #10 x 1/2" Stainless Steel Screws to affix the plate to the mounting bracket. You can see slight indentations where the screws are to go. I drilled pilot holes first.

    • Don't use the "standard" license plate hardware that is 3/4" long. Those screws appear to be long enough to hit the bumper when inserted.

I would like to know where the license plate bracket/frame was purchased.

Nice instructions! I bought my Touareg from Honda dealer with no front plate holder. They ordered me the holder but it came with no instructions. These were perfect! Thank you!!!

Really, VW. $45,000+ for an ID.4 and *I* have to drill holes in the body to mount the license. This stinks.
