Introduction

This guide gives you the steps and tools needed to replace your watch battery. Typically, people take their watches to a professional who has special tools to fix it but, this is expensive due to top of the line watch making technology. The tools required for this guide as mentioned in the tool list can be purchased in good quality at a reasonable price.

Your watch press may not be assembled when you get it so you will need to follow the manual that comes with your watch press to know how to assemble it. If your watch is older, it may take some elbow grease to pry it open with a few tries. But not too much force!

Replacing a watch battery on your own without professional assistance may seem ambitious however, it is completely doable with the right tools.

Place the tip of a watch prying knife under the tab and push it in until it stops. Lift the knife in an upwards motion followed by a downwards motion. You should hear a "click."
Repeat if needed until the back pops off.

Optional: Remove the rubber gasket and replace it with a new one.
In older watches, the gasket may wear out and will need to be replaced.
Be careful when handling the gasket. Older gaskets may stretch or break when removed too aggressively.

Using tweezers, grip the edge of the white plastic ring and lift it up and out of the watch.

Release the spring bar by pushing it back to eject the battery. Hold it in place carefully for the next two steps.
The spring bar is the part that secures the battery.
Place the new battery into the battery compartment.
Push the battery into the compartment and let go of the spring bar.
The spring bar should secure the battery on its own.

Place the plastic ring back into the watch.

Locate the notch under the tab on the watch back. Line up the notch so that it sits over the knob that operates the watch hands.
Place a square of plastic film under the watch front and another square over the back.
You can lay them flat as shown or wrap the watch in a single square.

Lay the watch in the watch press die with the back facing up.
Turn the lever in a counter-clockwise motion.
When the top die is has almost reached the watch, hold it with your left hand to keep it in place. Continue to turn the lever until the top die has gone as far as it can go.
