Introduction
If you own one of these laptops, it is likely you need this guide because your current battery is too weak (common i7 spec problem) or the battery in your system is worn out. This guide will show you how to replace the battery in the E6540.
Note: If you have a slice battery installed, this will need to be removed first.
Along with battery replacement instructions, this guide will show you where the Windows 7 COA on these laptops is placed. If you are not using Dell SLIC installation media, this key will be required. This is not required for Windows 8.1 Pro systems since the key is stored in the BIOS and the only sticker is a tamper evident one on the service panel.

Locate the Hibernate option in the Start menu and click it. Once started, let the system finish and replace the battery.

Sleep mode: Select Sleep and the computer will be done relatively quickly. However, the power adapter will need to be plugged in.

Flip the laptop over, and unlock the 2 battery tabs. The tabs will remain unlocked until the battery is removed.

Align the battery with the tabs on the back of the laptop. Once done, drop the battery in place and it should lock in. If needed, put light pressure on the battery.
