Chest Freezer Mercury Recovery Procedure

Introduction

The Mercury Recovery procedure ensures the safe extraction of mercury switches from appliances while working in the Market Delivery Operation (MDO) facilities.

Mercury switches can be found in the light socket inside the freezer lid of a chest freezer. If a chest freezer has a manual switch, it does not contain mercury.

 

Regardless of if mercury switches were found or not, the technician should place a completion sticker over the “May Contain Mercury Switches NEEDS INSPECTION” sticker to signify that the unit was inspected.

IMPORTANT: If Mercury is released during recovery, the technician should contact the MDOM and 3E for cleanup and rope off the area with safety cones and caution tape.
