    • Flip the device over so the metal plate is facing you.

    • Undo the latches on the side to remove the metal plate.

    • Using a Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the black screws to release the back cover.

    • To unscrew all of the screws, you will need to close the latches again.

    • Do not pull the cover apart too far as the speaker is in the cover and connected to the motherboard.

Note that the fourth screw (lower right in photo) is hidden underneath the label which has to be lifted up. When you lift the label up, there’s a sticker over the screw head with a red X that will be punctured when you remove the screw.

I need to replace the gear and am here because I know this is the best resource but I am hitting a wall. My August locks via the app just fine. When I attempt to unlock it via the the app it will report that it is unlocked but does not actually unlock.

I have a newborn at home and really need this to work. Any help would be appreciated.

    • Lift the cover off the device and set to the side.

    • The cover contains the speaker which is connected to the motherboard so do not pull to far apart.

    • Remove the gears as shown.

Although probably overkill to solve my problem, I ended up opening up my August lock because the adapter for the Kwikset lock (that looks like a D ) wasn’t oriented correctly and I needed one that was rotated 90 degrees to the right. I opened up my August lock to see if I could rotate the assembly inside 90 degrees. And the short answer is, you can.

First, be aware that the sensor wire on the center adapter gear only goes so far, and it’s the thing that gives the center gear it’s “springiness”. There are no springs though. Only thing you have to look out for is make sure it doesn’t become too taught.

Next, if you get an error “UNAMBIGUOUSPOSITION”, don’t panic. Factory reset your lock and it will be fine.

August, if you’re reading this, you need another Kwikset adapter that is rotated 90 degrees. I couldn’t adjust the deadbolt or flip the adapter around to address my situation. Ping me if you want more info.

The tittle of this topic is: August Smart Lock Gear Replacement, but I don't see any spare part replacement at all!

Any tips on where to get replacement gears?

The gear connecting the motor is cracked. I'd also like to know where to get parts other than buying another broken August lock that's broken in another way.

I’ve epoxied my gear part back together twice now. You have to expoxy the part and then clean/file it down so it can fit back in the locking system and allow the other parts to turn without binding. Each epoxy has lasted about a year or so.

I would love a replacement part but can’t find one.

I’m going to try it a 3rd time.

If anybody has any better ideas please post them.
