The Wild Heerbrugg M8 is a premium, research-grade stereomicroscope featuring a modular design that permits effortless integration of alternative stands, illumination units, and phototubes. First introduced in 1974 and subsequently discontinued in the late 1980s following Wild Heerbrugg's transition to Leica, it remains highly regarded for its robust mechanical construction. The optical system utilises a multi-coated, achromatically corrected common main objective (CMO) design that provides a continuously variable 1:8 zoom range, yielding magnifications from 6× to 50× with standard 10× eyepieces. Under standard configurations with a 1.0× plan objective, the instrument maintains a highly stable and generous working distance of approximately 91 mm.
