Background and Identification
Spectroscopy is the analysis of matter based on the dispersion of wavelengths of any radiative wave (electromagnetic, vibrational, gravitational, etc.) that passes through it. As far as medical applications go, spectroscopy is typically used in tissue analysis or as component of some medical imaging disciplines, like MRI or FTIR. Since different spectroscopic methods can be used to analyze different states of matter at a wide array of scales, medical applications make use of a small range of these methods, in roughly the molecular range. Mass spectrometers are used in several chemical analysis applications auxiliary to medicine.
