Core Technology and Logic
The Segway PT is a masterclass in redundant systems and feedback loops:
- Dynamic Stabilization: The unit uses five solid-state gyroscopes and two tilt sensors that monitor the rider's center of gravity 100 times per second. It functions as an inverted pendulum problem, where the brushless DC motors instantly drive the wheels to stay under the rider's weight.
- Redundant Architecture: To ensure safety, the PT features redundant batteries, motor windings, and dual-core processors. If one "logic rail" fails, the other can bring the rider to a safe, controlled stop.
- LeanSteer™ Technology: Introduced in the second generation (i2 and x2), this system replaced the original twist-grip steering. It uses a tilt sensor in the steering column to translate a side-to-side lean of the handlebars into a turning command—a more intuitive "body-logic" interface.
