Overview
While REL high-level cables utilize standard, highly reliable Neutrik speakON connectors (typically the NL4FX 4-pole variant), the internal wiring layout is strictly proprietary. In standard pro-audio applications, a speakON cable carries a powered signal directly to a passive speaker. However, a REL high-level connection taps the raw voltage from your main amplifier's speaker outputs and sends it to the subwoofer's high-impedance input stage. Because of this unique design, standard off-the-shelf pro-audio speakON cables will not work and can cause damage if connected to a REL subwoofer.
⚠️ Critical Compatibility & Safety Warnings
- Amplifier Short Circuit Risk: Miswiring the speakON terminal can bridge the positive channels of your main amplifier, leading to immediate overcurrent failure or blown output transistors. Always double-check your connections with a continuity tester/multimeter before plugging the cable into your subwoofer or powering on your amplifier.
- Class-D / Balanced Amplifier Caution: Standard wiring rules (combining the black ground wire to a chassis screw or negative binding post) apply to traditional Class-A/B amplifiers. If your main amplifier utilizes a Class-D switching topology or a differential/balanced output stage, the black ground wire must never touch the negative speaker terminal. Instead, it must be connected to a chassis ground or left completely disconnected to prevent component damage.
