Background
Announced March 2nd, 2026 at MWC 2026, the ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 is Lenovo's mainstream 16-inch business laptop and the larger sibling of the T14 Gen 7. It replaces the T16 Gen 4. It comes in Intel and AMD versions that share the same chassis. The AMD version is sold with two different processor families, Ryzen AI PRO 400 and Ryzen 200, each with its own machine types.
The Intel version uses Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) processors, up to the Core Ultra X7 368H with Intel Arc B390 graphics, and a single LPCAMM2 memory module of up to 64 GB. The AMD version uses either AMD Ryzen AI PRO 400 Series or Ryzen 200 Series processors with two DDR5 SODIMM slots, up to 96 GB on Ryzen AI PRO 400 and 64 GB on Ryzen 200. All models have a 16-inch WUXGA display, a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad, one M.2 2280 SSD slot, a 60 Wh or 75 Wh battery, an RJ45 ethernet port, and optional 4G LTE or 5G. A 2.8K 120 Hz OLED panel is offered only on the Intel version.
Lenovo gave availability from April 2026 in Europe, with an estimated starting price of 1,499 EUR, and both versions could be ordered in Germany in April 2026. As of October 2026, Lenovo's US store lists it starting at $1,759 USD (AMD Ryzen 200), with the AMD Ryzen AI PRO 400 version from $1,799 USD and the Intel version from $2,079 USD. It comes in Eclipse Black.
Identification
Like other ThinkPad products, the T16 Gen 5 is readily identifiable by the make and model number printed on the bottom cover, in order to aid in finding compatible parts and repair procedures. The same information is available in Windows under Lenovo Vantage, or in the BIOS setup under Main.
- Intel T16 Gen 5: machine types 21WT and 21WU
- AMD T16 Gen 5 (Ryzen AI PRO 400): machine types 21WX and 21WY
- AMD T16 Gen 5 (Ryzen 200): machine types 22AN and 22AQ
The two AMD versions share a chassis and spec sheet but use different processors and machine types. Intel models use an LPCAMM2 memory module, while AMD models use DDR5 SODIMMs.
Repairability
The T14 Gen 7 and T16 Gen 5 represent a major step forward in terms of repairability and sustainability for the ThinkPad line. As part of its continued commitment to simpler repairs and upgradeability, Lenovo consulted directly with the iFixit Solutions team to refine the design and make instructions and replacement parts more readily available for end users. The ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 (along with its sibling, the smaller T14 Gen 7) earns an amazing 10 out of 10 on iFixit's repairability scale—learn more here.
