Background
Announced March 16th, 2026 at NVIDIA GTC alongside the P14s Gen 7 and P16s Gen 5, the ninth generation P1 mobile workstation replaces the P1 Gen 8 after only about six months. It moves to Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors and NVIDIA RTX PRO Blackwell graphics, and it is the first P1 with Thunderbolt 5.
Like the P1 Gen 7 and Gen 8 before it, the P1 Gen 9 uses LPCAMM2. New for this generation is an optional 3.2K Tandem OLED touch display with a 120 Hz variable refresh rate and 1,500 nit HDR peak brightness. North American configurations topped out at 64 GB of memory at launch, while other regions could order 96 GB.
The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 shipped in Asia and Europe in June 2026 and reached North America shortly after. Base configurations pair the Core Ultra 7 356H with integrated graphics, 32 GB of memory, and a 1 TB SSD. International launch pricing was £3,405 in the UK and 3,413 euros in the Eurozone.
Identification
Like other ThinkPad products, the P1 Gen 9 is identifiable by the model name and machine type printed on the label on the bottom cover. The P1 Gen 9 uses machine types 21UE and 21UF. The same information is available in Windows under Lenovo Vantage, or in the BIOS setup under Main.
The P1 Gen 9 shares its 16-inch black aluminum chassis with the Gen 7 and Gen 8. The quickest external tell is the port layout: the Gen 9 has three USB-C ports on the left side (two Thunderbolt 5 and one Thunderbolt 4) where the Gen 7 had two Thunderbolt 4 ports and one 10 Gbps USB-C port.
