Background and Identification
The Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 is equipped with low-power Intel U-series chips, including,
- Intel Celeron 3865U with Intel HD 610 integrated graphics
- Intel Core i3-7100U with Intel HD 620 integrated graphics
- Intel Core i5-7200U with Intel HD 620 integrated graphics
- Intel Core i5-7300U with Intel HD 620 integrated graphics
- Intel Core i7-7500U with Intel HD 620 integrated graphics
which all draw a maximum of 15 watts. This helps maximize the life of its quite small 3-cell 42Wh battery, which lasts up to 14.56 hours according to the Lenovo PSREF, though the actual lifespan may be much lower in everyday use. All 5 of the available CPU options on the ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 support only the slower side of DDR4 RAM, with maximum memory transfer speeds measuring in at 2133 MHz. They also support up to 32GB of RAM spread across 2 SODIMM memory slots located just near the CPU.
The 2 main storage options for the ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 are SATA M.2 and NVMe. The slot on the motherboard supports full-sized 2280 SSDs, allowing for the drive to be upgraded or replaced if it ever fails.
Through hands-on testing, it has been discovered that the laptop may not recognize NVMe drives at all through the M.2 SSD slot if the unit is equipped with an Intel Celeron 3865, restricting internal SSD usage to SATA M.2 only for this configuration. This may be caused by a faulty test unit or because the Celeron variant of the laptop does not support the NVMe protocol through the M.2 SSD slot.
The Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 ships with the Intel Wireless 8265 WiFi+Bluetooth card in an M.2 slot located near the right hinge. This card supports Bluetooth 4.2 (locked to Bluetooth 4.1 by Windows OS, according to the Lenovo PSREF) and WiFi 5, allowing for a theoretical data transfer speed of up to 867 Mbps on the 5 GHz frequency. The card is MIMO and uses 2 separate antennas, both of which route through the right-side hinge and up behind the laptop's display. This card is completely modular and can be replaced with a higher-end 2230 M.2 WiFi card in case you ever need to. The Lenovo OneLink+ connector on the left side of the laptop provides Ethernet connection via a OneLink+ to RJ45 adapter, as this laptop does not have a dedicated RJ45 port.
There are 3 display options for the Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Gen 2, including,
- A 13.3" (338mm) HD (1366x768), anti-glare, LED backlight, 250 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio screen
- A 13.3" (338mm) FHD (1920x1080), anti-glare, LED backlight, IPS, 250 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 700:1 contrast ratio, 170° viewing angle screen.
- A 13.3" (338mm) FHD (1920x1080), anti-glare, LED backlight, IPS, 250 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 700:1 contrast ratio, 170° viewing angle, 10-point multi-touch screen.
The laptop can output to a total of 3 independent displays via the USB-C port, the Lenovo OneLink+ connector, the onboard HDMI port, or the integrated display.
The ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 includes a 6-row keyboard with a backlight-enabled version available. It has a TrackPoint nub between the B, G, and H keys and dedicated left, middle, and right click buttons above the trackpad.
This ThinkPad has a large selection of high-speed ports, allowing you to connect multiple devices to the laptop at the same time. The included ports on the ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 are:
Left-side ports:
- AC input
- Lenovo OneLink+
- USB-A 3.1 gen 1 (always on)
Right-side ports:
- 4-in-1 SD card reader (MMC, SD, SDHC, SDXC)
- headphone/mic combo
- 2x USB-A 3.1 gen 1
- HDMI 1.4b
- USB-C 3.1 gen 1
- Kensington lock
The Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Gen 2 comes in a plastic (black) or aluminum (silver) chassis. The plastic chassis' measurements are as follows:
- 12.69"/322.4mm W x 8.77"/222.8mm L x 0.78"/19.8mm H
The aluminum chassis' dimensions are as follows:
- 12.69"/322.4mm W x 8.77"/222.8mm L x 0.75"/19.1mm H
Both versions of the laptop weigh approximately 3.17 lbs/1.44 kg.
