Troubleshooting
If you are having difficulties with the GE Profile Opal 2.0 XPI013BCCBT; try referring to the troubleshooting page.
Background
The Opal Nugget Ice Maker was first launched through FirstBuild, a subsidiary innovation hub of GE Appliances, in 2015, raising more than $2.7 million through crowdfund site Indiegogo. Units officially reached consumers in mid-2016 and expanded to wider retail distribution by 2017. The original machine made 1 pound of ice per hour and held up to 3 pounds. However, it gained a reputation for being noisy and requiring extensive cleaning due to a design that kept the water reservoir near the warm mechanics, which invited mold growth.
In 2020, GE Appliances formally integrated the product under its premier GE Profile badge. Opal 2.0 design changes included relocating the internal water reservoir away from heat elements to the "cool side" of the machine, dropping mold growth and cleaning difficulties. It featured a more reliable, quieter pump system, integrated Wi-Fi capabilities for scheduling with the SmartHQ app, and introduced a popular attachable side water tank.
GE later sold a more affordable version called the Opal 1.0. It used the same internal ice-making mechanics but removed the Wi-Fi connection, came with a basic finish, and lacked the acoustic shielding of the 2.0 package.
GE Profile introduced the Ultra version in 2024, featuring upgraded filters and internal descaling maintenance alerts, and a max daily output capacity at around 38 pounds. GE Profile then launched the Opal Mini, Opal Mini Pro, and Opal Mini Pro+ in 2026. These models have a 30% smaller footprint and 25% less weight than the Opal Ultra while keeping a comparable output. They added a top-fill lid so users no longer have to pull out the ice bin to add water, along with improved drainage to delay scale buildup. The GE Profile Brewpal launched in September 2026, a single-serve coffee maker made to attach directly next to an Opal ice maker to pull ice automatically for iced coffee drinks.
